    • Vivo V20 2021 Listed on Amazon at ₹24990 (Gets 730G Chipset)

      alt text

The much-awaited Vivo V20 (2021) got listed on Amazon India portal without any official announcement from Vivo. Though there were a number of leaks, none expected it to be a silent affair.

      Vivo V20 2021 vs Vivo V20:

The new version of Vivo V20 2021 is now available for purchase on Amazon India website. Powered by Snapdragon 730G SoC and 8GB RAM, the new handset is priced at ₹24990. As it’s a part of Amazon’s Fab Phones Fest, you get a 10% instant discount on purchasing with HDFC Card.

      alt text

In short, the Vivo V20 2021 model sports a 6.44-inch FHD+ 1080X2400 screen with 64MP triple rear camera, 44MP selfie cam, 8GB RAM and 128GB inbuilt storage and backed by 4000mAh battery with 33W fast charging.

Except for the chipset, there’s nothing new on the Vivo V20 2021 model. The previous model had Snapdragon 720 SoC whereas the 2021 model is powered by the 730G chipset.

      Vivo V20 2021 Specifications:

Let us have the specs of Vivo V20 2021 in detail.

The Vivo V20 2021 model also sports a 6.44-inch AMOLED display with 1080x2400p resolution carrying 20:9 aspect ratio and 409ppi. The handset is just 7.4mm thick and weighs 172 grams. So sleek and light as a feather.

Don’t be confused with the older version of Vivo V20 as it is powered by the Snapdragon 720 whereas the new variant gets 730G SoC. Though it’s not the latest chipset, doing good when combined with Adreno 618 GPU for graphical tasks.

      Vivo V20 2021’s 64MP Triple Camera Setup:

On the optics side, there’s a 64MP triple camera including 64MP main with f/1.9 aperture, 8MP ultra-wide with f/2.2 aperture, and 2MP cam for depth and portrait shots. It can handle 4K video shots at 30 frames per second. For selfies, there’s a 44MP camera with f/2.0 aperture than can handle videos as well.

Booting the latest Android 11 with FunTouch 11 on top, the Vivo V20 2021 is one of the very few handsets to stay in tune with the OS updates. With 8GB RAM and 128GB inbuilt space expandable up to 1TB, the Vivo V20 2021 has a dedicated microSD card slot.

Connectivity-wise, it supports Dual SIM dual-standby (4G+4G), Bluetooth, WiFi Hotspot, GPS, and has E-compass and Gyroscope sensor too. One can grab the new Vivo V20 2021 handset in two colours, Sunset Melody and Midnight Jazz.

Should you Buy Vivo V20 2021?

Though the Vivo V20 has got good reviews it is facing severe competition from OnePlus Nord 5G, Samsung’s Galaxy A51 and Realme X3 SuperZoom. Interestingly, the older model is still available on Amazon.

Thus, one can expect the phaseout of Vivo V20 very soon as it gets replaced by the newer Vivo V20 2021 smartphone.

    • Jio’s 21.4% Users are Inactive (Airtel Adds 3.7M Wireless Users)

      alt text

As per the latest reports from TRAI, Bharti Airtel leads for the 3rd straight month in terms of subscriber addition. Airtel has added 3.7 million wireless subscribers as against to Jio’s addition of 2.2 million.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its October 2020 report. The report says that Airtel grew by 1.12% whereas Jio is up by 0.55% and Vi down by another 0.9% when compared to previous month’s data.

Airtel Leads for 3rd Straight Month:

In terms of subscribers, the Airtel added 3.67 million, Jio added 2.2 million, and Vi combine lost 2.65 million wireless subscribers in October 2020. Shockingly, the state-run telecom player BSNL has also lost 10,208 subscribers from its kitty.

When the over-all subscription base is considered, Jio leads the market with 406.36 million, followed by Airtel’s 330.29 million and Vi’s 292.84 million.

21.41% Users of Reliance Jio are Inactive:

However, the pan-India 4G VoLTE operator Reliance Jio also has a great proportion of inactive users. The inactive subscribers of Jio, Airtel and Vi stand at 21.41%, 3.26% and 11.22%.

Out of the total 1151.81 million subscribers, only 960.91 million subscribers are active users. The analysis on active wireless subscribers reveals a piece of shocking news to Reliance Jio. Only 78.59% of Jio’s subscribers are active users. Whereas the scenario is bright for Bharti Airtel with about 96.74% active users.

      alt text

The wireline subscriber’s data is a bit encouraging for Reliance Jio. It has gained 245,912 connections when compared to Airtel’s 48,397. The broadband market share (both wireline and wireless) is dominated by Jio (55.53%), Airtel (23.17%), Vodafone (16.4%), and BSNL (3.52%).

Still, BSNL is the market leader in terms of wired broadband connection. It has 7.75 million subscribers, followed by Airtel’s (2.67 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (1.74 million), Reliance Jio (1.7 million) and Hathway Cable (1.05 million).

      alt text

The TRAI October 2020 also revealed that 8 states have less teledensity than national average 86.38% teledensity. Bihar registers the lowest teledensity of 52.60% and Delhi has the maximum teledensity of 273.94%

Though the Indian government is taking concrete steps in the development of the telecom sector, a lot has to be done with respect to the states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and North East.

      alt text

With a series of launches, the mobile market which has seen a low phase in COVID-19 is bouncing back. Staring with Google and Apple, the smartphone makers are bringing new products to their product lineup.

Taking the cues, the Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi is trying to impress smartphone lovers with its new innovative design and smart features. The latest feature included in Xiaomi smartphone is surrounded display and pop-up camera.

Xiaomi’s New Phone with 360-Degree Display:

Yes, you read it right! The 360-Degree display is the new feature that has got patented by Xiaomi under a code name Draco. Though Xiaomi has got this surround display in its Mi Mix Alpha handset, it went unnoticed. The company didn’t focus much on it.

    • GoI Targets 2 Million Wi-Fi Hotspots by 2021 (Under PM Wani)

      alt text

Aiming to boost the “Digital India” vision, the government is working to set up 1 million Wi-Fi hotspots across the country by the end of 2021. This massive connectivity program will be built under the recently launched PM Wani initiative.

The public Wi-Fi access will see a four-fold increase by end of 2021. According to Mr Anshu Prakash, Secretary, Telecom Department, the government’s drive to kick start registrations for PM Wani will begin soon.

      All India W-Fi Hotspot Scheme:

According to the Cisco Annual Internet Report (2018-2023), there will be nearly 623 million public Wi-Fi hotspots across the world by 2023. As per the calculations of the TRAI, India should have 100 million Wi-Fi hotspots by 2023.

However, India has about 0.5 Million Wi-Fi hotspot access points right now. And this figure will see a four-fold increase as per the DoT. The C-DoT is working to make W-Fi access boxes at half the market price.

As soon as the technology development centre of the DoT gives permission, the registration process would start. One can expect all the formalities to be completed by the first week of January 2021.

Registration is Open to All for Becoming a PDOA:

      alt text

The PM Wani (Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) service is open to all. Anyone can register as a Public Data Operator Aggregator (PDOA). The process seems to be simple.

By filling the required details in a single page at the central registry portal, one can register as a PDOA. If there is no response from the portal within 7 days, then assume that the registration is deemed approved. Or else, the concerned authority will look into the issue.

Connecting More People to Facilitate Local Business:

The PDOA will tie-up with small businesses to install Wi-Fi hotspots in public places. It can be anywhere including market places, tourist spots, highway restaurants, coffee cafes etc.

These entrepreneurs become Public Data Operators (PDOs). A PDO could be the owner of a grocery store or Kirana shop and even a pan vendor and doesn’t need a license or registration. However, PDOs will have to buy bandwidth from telcos and internet service providers and resell them to consumers.

Mr Anshu Prakash reiterated that meetings will be held between PM Wani stakeholders and various telcos and ISPs to start this process.

In this PM Wani setup, the PDOAs will provide the necessary backend support to PDOs. This entire platform will be developed by the C-DoT. It includes authorization, authentication, accounting, voucher management and linking to payment gateways.

Public Wi-Fi through PM Wani App:

      alt text

Those who want to access Public Wi-Fi should open the PM Wani App and choose from a list of all Wani PDOAs providing network connectivity. This is like purchasing an internet voucher from your ISP.

Interestingly, this PM Wani initiative was proposed by the telecom regulator 4 years back. And the launch is expected within a month of its cabinet approval.

The pilot project itself constitutes 70 stakeholders from the ecosystem including ISPs and ICT manufacturers. The Telecom Department (DoT) has also formed five working groups to minimize hiccups in rolling out PM Wani.

      alt text

In a strategic move, Bharti Airtel opened its Xstream streaming service to non-Airtel users. This is an introductory offer that can be availed at a price of ₹499 and has a validity of 1 year.

It’s to be noted that Xstream is an exclusive streaming service available for Airtel Prepaid, Airtel Postpaid, Airtel DTH and Airtel Broadband customers only.

      Airtel Xstream @ ₹499 for 1 Year:

The special introductory price of ₹499 is applicable to new customers and comes with a validity of 1 year. Both the Airtel and non-Airtel users can avail of this opportunity.

To the unaware, the Airtel Xstream mobile app gives access to over 350 live channels, 10000+ movies, TV Shows, Originals and more. However, the web version limits access to only 100 live channels. One can watch Live TV channels in their favourite local Indian languages.

In comparison to Jio’s offering, the Airtel regularly updates its live TV channels count and is a one-stop solution for entertainment. Recently, the company has got tie-ups with many broadcasters and thus added over 73 new live TV channels across various genres including sports and entertainment.

As said earlier, the Airtel has tied up with many broadcasters including Lions Gate, Voot, ZEE5, Hungama Play, Eros Now, Shemaroo Me, and Ultra. The USP of Airtel Xstream is its built-in Chromecast support.

It enables the user to cast favourite content from smartphone to TV with the Airtel Xstream’s Google Chromecast built-in.

      Xstream - What’s Your Opinion?

By opening the gates to non-Airtel users, the Bharti Airtel has taken a good step. Moreover, it will also help the company to increase the subscription base.

    • Instagram Now Handles Apple ProRAW Photos (With Some Limitations)

      alt text

The introduction of Apple ProRAW seems to be a massive leap forward in photography. No sooner the Apple announced this powerful ProRAW feature in its flagship iPhone 12 Pro Max, Instagram started rolling out the support for it.

The American photo and video sharing social network service Instagram announced its support for Apple ProRAW photos. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max is incorporated with the technology close to the DSLRs.

The Apple ProRAW takes photography to the next level. The flagship iPhone users can shoot in RAW and capture as many details as possible in the Apple ProRAW format. The credit must be given to Apple’s computational photography tools like Smart HDR and Deep Fusion.

Starting today, Instagram would be able to handle sharing of Apple ProRAW photos. This was announced by none other than Instagram Developer Time Johnson in his tweet.

iPhone 12 Pro & iPhone 12 Pro Max with ProRAW Format:

      alt text

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max with iOS 14.3 or later can take snaps in Apple ProRAW. This will give greater control when editing photos as seen in DSLR RAW photography.

Till now, the Instagram iPhone users have to create a separate JPG format file to share the content on Instagram. Moreover, the average size of the ProRAW image is around 25MB. Thus, the users should turn on the ProRAW feature only when required or else it eats a lot of storage on your phone.

Compress or Lose Your Storage on iPhone:

Thus, the file size has to be compressed so as to be uploaded in Instagram social sharing platform. If you are really concerned about the size, then you can use a third-party app like Darkroom to edit ProRAW images.

Moreover, you can also edit Apple ProRAW on in the default Photos app or with other third-party apps like Halide. The Apple ProRAW gives increased control over exposure, contrast and colours.

The latest iOS update facilitates the Apple ProRAW even in the Night mode. Back to Instagram, this ProRAW support gives more flexibility to the professional photographers with their Instagram posts.

    • Work from Home Data Packs Compared (BSNL ₹251 Tops the List)

      alt text

No doubt data consumption in India at peak. With the introduction of 4G services, there has been tremendous demand for data. Probably, data is the new oil of the digital economy.

Interestingly, economists believe that the world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil but data. Leaving the tech companies aside, there has been a great demand for data.

In the telecom sector, with COVID-19, there is an increasing demand for work from home data packs. The telecom network providers used to concentrate on bundled packs that offer data with voice calling benefit. However, COVID-19 pandemic changed the scenario.

Starting from work from home employees to online learning enthusiasts, there’s a good demand for exclusive data packs. Now, the focus of telecom players shifted to data packs in the name of work from home plans.

All the major telecom network providers (including both private and public) have got different work from home plans for their prepaid mobile subscribers. Let us have a quick review of the plans.

      Jio Work from Home Packs:

The 4G VoLTE telecom network Jio has got three plans for work from home enthusiasts. Starting with ₹151, Jio has got 3 packs namely ₹151, ₹201, and ₹251.

All these 3 packs do have a 30 days validity. The ₹151 provides unlimited 30GB and the ₹201 ships unlimited 40GB. The highest ₹251 offers unlimited 50GB per month.

      Plan Validity Benefit
      ₹151 30 Days Unlimited 30 GB Data
      ₹201 30 Days Unlimited 40 GB Data
      ₹251 30 Days Unlimited 50 GB Data

Airtel Work from Home Data Packs:

Currently, Airtel offers 4 data packs. Starting with ₹48, the Airtel Data packs include ₹98, ₹251, and ₹401. Both ₹48 and ₹401 data packs have a validity of 28 days. On the other hand, the ₹98 and ₹251 data packs have the same validity as your current pack.

If you are a heavy data user, then ₹401 pack is for you. It ships 30GB data with 28 days validity. Or else go with ₹251 pack that offers a mammoth 50GB data. However, the validity of the pack remains the same as your current pack.

      Plan Validity Benefit
      ₹48 28 Days 3GB Data
      ₹98 Existing Validity 12GB Data
      ₹251 Existing Validity 50GB Data
      ₹401 28 Days 30GB Data

Vi Work from Home Data Packs:

The Vodafone Idea network too got 3 data exclusive plans for work from home enthusiasts. Starting with ₹16, there is 3 work from home packs namely ₹16, ₹251 and ₹351.

The ₹16 Vi pack offers 1GB data with 24 hours validity. The ₹251 and ₹351 work from home packs offer 50GB and 100GB data with a validity period of 28 and 56 days respectively.

      Plan Validity Benefit
      ₹ 16 24 Hours 1GB Data
      ₹ 251 28 Days 50 GB Data
      ₹ 351 56 Days 100 GB Data

BSNL Work from Home Mobile Plans:

The state-run telecom player BSNL has also got 3 work from home data-only STV’s. Starting with ₹56, the other packs are ₹151 and ₹251.

The BSNL work from home prepaid STVs is aimed at work from home enthusiasts. That’s the reason, they just ship data and no voice calling benefit in similar lines with that of Jio, Airtel and Vi work from home data packs.

The smallest ₹56 work from STV offers 10GB data with 10 days of validity. The bigger ₹151 STV and ₹251 prepaid STV offer 40GB and 70GB of data benefit with 28 days validity.

There are some individual packs such as BSNL ₹247 STV that ships daily 3GB data and unlimited calling (FUP 250min per day) with a validity of 30 days. That means the user gets a whooping 90GB data in 30 days.

This pack is economical when compared to ₹251 prepaid STV that offer 70GB data with 28 days validity. However, it limits the usage of data up to 3GB only. If the user wants to download a bigger size file then there’s no use of this ₹247 STV.

      Plan Validity Benefit
      ₹ 56 10 Day 10 GB Data
      ₹ 151 28 Days 40 GB Data
      ₹ 251 28 Days 70 GB Data

If one considers the ₹251 as the industry standard work from home data pack, then the private telecom players including Jio, Airtel, Vi offer 50GB unlimited data.

However, the state-run telecom player BSNL offers a whooping 70GB data benefit. That’s really a big considerate plan from BSNL.

Dongguan-based Chinese tech company Vivo has launched Vivo Y30 Standard Edition smartphone for its home market. Though it resembles the Indian variant Vivo Y30, the Standard Edition is a unique one with a few twists.

Connectivity-wise, the Chinese version of Vivo Y30 sports a dual 4G VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB OTG, Bluetooth 5.0, USP port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is equipped with a gravity sensor, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, compass, and a virtual gyro sensor.

What’s Your Opinion on Vivo Y30 Standard Edition?

Backed by a huge 5000mAh battery and 10W fast-charging support, the Vivo Y30 Standard Edition can easily last for 2 days and more. The sleek design combined with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage space makes it a decent buy.

    • Redmi 9 Power with 48MP AI Quad Camera & 6000mAh Battery (At ₹10999)

      alt text

The Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi has launched the much-awaited Redmi 9 Power smartphone in the Indian market. True to its name, Xiaomi has packed a mammoth 6000mAh battery pack in its new offering.

Xiaomi known for launching two Redmi Note handsets in a year couldn’t make it in this 2020 year. The company has been still pushing the Redmi Note 9th series both in China and India. Probably, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted its plans to counter the growing popularity of Realme.

      Another Chinese Variant in India:

Joining the product line, Redmi 9 Power hits the headlines with a large 6000mAh battery that powers the device with 18W fast charging support and 2.5W reverse charging. For the unaware, the Chinese variant Redmi Note 9 4G makes it to India with a new name Redmi 9 Power.

      alt text

Interestingly, the new Redmi 9 Power gets a lot of similarity from its latest POCO M3 handset. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 662 chipset, the Redmi 9 Power will certainly attract a lot of competition from Samsung Galaxy M11, Poco M3, Vivo Y20 and Oppo A53.

The Redmi 9 Power has got a TUV Rheinland certification that brings down the low light emission making it safer for eyes. Weighing under 200 grams is a huge plus sign when there are negative reviews surrounding POCO handsets for being bulky.

      Redmi 9 Power Specification:

In terms of specification, the Redmi 9 Power sports a 6.53-inch full HD+ (1080x2340p) Dot Drop display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 395 ppi density. It has a max 400 nits of brightness and a Corning Gorilla 3 protection (and splash-proof) on the top. It is to be noted that Dot Drop is nothing but Xiaomi’s version of a waterdrop-style notch.

Powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC, Adreno 610 GPU and 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM, the Redmi 9 Power has got 2 variants based on storage space 64GB and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage. The storage space can be further expandable up to 512GB using a microSD card.

      Redmi 9 Power Camera Configuration:

On the optics front, the Redmi 9 Power sports a 48MP AI Quad Camera Setup. It includes 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide lens with 120˚ Field of View, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor. The Chinese variant doesn’t have the macro shooter. There’s an 8MP AI selfie camera and AI Face Unlock at the front. It also features Aura Power design which Xiaomi markets it as a new-age design.

Connectivity-wise, the Redmi 9 Power smartphone has a Dual 4G VoLTE, 2+1 dedicated SIM slot, VoWiFi, 3.5mm headphone jack, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, IR blaster, GPS and AGPS support. The box also packs a 22.5W charger.

      alt text

The Chinese smartphone maker Infinix Mobiles has added another entry-level smartphone to its product lineup. Titled Infinix Smart HD 2021, it is powered by the Helio A20 chipset.

The Infinix Smart HD 2021 is truly an entry-level handset based on Android 10 (Go Edition). The smartphone boots XOS 6.2 which is a custom version based on Android 10 Go Edition.

      Infinix Smart HD 2021 Specifications:

This entry-level smartphone sports a 6.1-inch HD+ screen with a notch for 5MP selfie camera. Powered by 1.8GHz Quad-Core MediaTek’s Helio A20 chipset (12nm) and 2GB RAM, it provides a 32GB inbuilt storage space that can be further expandable up to 256GB using a microSD card.

On the optics front, there’s an 8MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture and 5MP AI selfie camera accompanied by an LED flash. Though an entry-level handset, it houses a fingerprint reader.

Backed by a big 5000mAh battery and charging through a USB port, it promises a 2-day battery life and 28 hours of video playback. The Infinix Smart HD 2021 packs the required connectivity options including VoWiFi enabled dual VoLTE, HDMI (ARC), USB, Coaxial, AUX, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

      alt text

Moreover, it is equipped with a DTS Surround Sound facility with a 3.5mm headphone jack. The latest Infinix handset comes in 3 colour options including Topaz Blue, Obsidian Black, and Quartz Green.

Priced at ₹5999, the Infinix Smart HD 2021 will be available for sale on Flipkart portal from December 24th onwards. Probably, the company wants to try its luck in the Christmas sale.

      What’s Your Opinion?

Fortunately, the entry-level market in India is flooded by many Chinese handset makers including Xiaomi, Realme, OPPO etc. The 6K pricing of Infinix Smart HD 2021 is not at all justifiable.

If Infinix Mobiles truly wants to have some sizeable market share, then it should think out of the box or else it should limit its concentration to the African market.
