    • Nokia 2.4 First Impressions (An Ideal Budget Phone from HMD Global)

      alt text

The Finnish company HMD Global has launched a new Android smartphone Nokia 2.4 to its lineup. Though it was released long back in the European market, Indian launch was delayed.

Nokia 2.4 with 4500mAh battery and MediaTek Helio P22 chipset is a budget smartphone in the company’s lineup that is well placed against Redmi 9 Prime and Realme C15.

Sporting a 6.5-inch (1600x720 pixels) IPS LCD display, the Nokia 2.4 smartphone has got bezels on all sides. There is a waterdrop notch at the front.

      Nokia 2.4 Specifications:

Powered by MediaTek Helio P22 SoC coupled with up to 3GB RAM, the Nokia 2.4 handset gets 2 storage variants namely 16GB and 32GB. The internal storage can be further expandable using a microSD card.

The smartphone features a dual-camera setup at the rear. It includes 13MP f/2.2 primary camera and 2MP depth sensor. For shooting selfies, it is equipped with 5MP front camera. You will be disappointed if you expect pixel-type photography with Nokia 2.4.

The Nokia 2.4 gets a dedicated Google Assistant button. Moreover, it packs a fingerprint scanner at the rear.

      AndroidOne Handset, So Guaranteed Updates:

Being an Android One device, it runs the stock Android 10 operating system (except the bloatware from Google itself). Above all, it will get Android 11 update and the guaranteed security updates for 3 years and software update for 2 years.

With 4500mAh battery, Nokia 2.4 will surely last for 2 days on moderate usage. On the connectivity front, Nokia 2.4 supports Bluetooth 5.0, headphone jack, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and microUSB port.

Though the handset measures 165.85mm in length, it weighs 189 grams. When the Chinese handsets are weighing more than 230grams, the HMD Global limits its size to 189 grams.

      What’s Your Opinion?

Available in Charcoal, Fjord, and Dusk colours, the Finnish company has fixed its price at INR 10,399. Though there is no official information regarding the date of its availability, the Nokia 2.4 handset is available for pre-booking in India.

In short, Nokia 2.4 is an ideal handset for someone who is looking for bigger display, big battery, and stock Android. Moreover, the brand Nokia itself is a big testimonial.

    • POCO M3 with 6000mAh Battery Goes Global (Supports Reverse Charging)

      alt text

The Chinese handset maker Xiaomi grabs the attention by launching POCO M3 in global markets. Incidentally, Poco M3 is the third member in this exclusive M series.

Along with striking design, mammoth battery, and reverse charging support, the Poco M3 is surely the best affordable smartphone at $129. Backed by a huge 6000mAh battery and 18W fast charger, the handset has got reverse charging facility. That means one can even charge other devices at 18W using a correct cable.

The company has claimed that Poco M3’s largest battery can last up to 5 days on light use. As per the data released by Poco Management, the 6000mAh battery can easily stay with you for more than a day on heavy usage and up to 3 days on moderate use.

Personally, I’ve seen many users opting low-cost basic Nokia and Samsung phones as secondary handsets for their excellent battery backup. Surely, Poco M3 is a quick fix for such problems.

Let’s go with the specifications of Poco M3 in detail:

      Poco M3 Specifications:

The new Poco M3 sports a 6.53-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display (1080x2340p) with 60Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the top. It has got a waterdrop notch too.

Powered by a 11nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset, Adreno 610 GPU and 4GB RAM, the Poco M3 is available in 2 storage variants 64GB and 128GB. It packs a dedicated microSD card slot option for expanding the storage.

Sporting a 48MP Triple Camera configuration, it includes 48MP primary camera with f/1.79 aperture, 2MP f/2.4 dedicated macro lens, and 2MP depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture.

There’s an 8MP selfie camera with f/2.1 aperture that can even shoot 1080p videos at 30fps rate.

The Poco M3 boots MIUI 12 based on Android 10 operating system and will get Android 11 update soon. As it’s a Poco handset, there’s a preloaded Poco launcher. The handset has got cool features like anti-fingerprint finish, IR blaster, and stereo speakers.

It offers all the required connectivity options including 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, and USB Type-C port.

      Poco M3 Availability:

Starting November 27, the Poco M3 will be available in Power Black, Cool Blue, and POCO Yellow colour. In Europe, the sale will begin on November 30. The company has not mentioned anything officially about its Indian launch.

With Black Friday, the Poco M3 would be on a discounted sale (Early Bird Price) costing $129 (€149) for 4/64GB version and $149 (€169) for 4/128GB variant. After the promotional campaign, the handsets would attract $20 premium pricing.

Though there’s no official information about Indian launch, one can expect it soon in the Asian markets. Definitely, one could expect a competitive pricing below 10K.
If priced under 10K, then Poco M3 would surely attract a lot of competition.

Leaving its own Redmi Note 9 series, there are many popular handsets like Realme C15, Vivo Y20i, Samsung M21, Realme 10 and many more.

Looking at the spec sheet, the Redmi Note 9 processor is way ahead in performance. However, the Poco M3 would surely come up as the winner owing to its big battery.

With the advent of JioFiber, Airtel XStream and BSNL Bharat Fiber joining the race, there is a cut-throat competition in ISP and FTTH market. The Excell Broadband has no other option except to revise its plans and stay in the competition.

Before revision, the Excell used to charge ₹699 and offer 50Mbps speed internet with 400GB FUP limit.

Keeping itself in the competition, the Excell Broadband 100Mpbs is charged at ₹799. This Ultimate plan comes with 1500GB limit and post the FUP usage, the speed gets limited to 2Mbps.

In a similar line, there’s a 2-month free subscription plus 100GB extra data offer for availing 12-month advance rental plan.

Leaving the OTT benefits, the Excell Broadband Preferred 150Mbps plan is surely the best plan to attract new and existing customers alike.

      alt text

The state-run telecom player BSNL has silently launched an affordable Fiber plan at just ₹599 per month. The BSNL Fiber Basic Plus ₹599 is now available for subscription through BSNL Selfcare portal.

Along with promotional plans, the BSNL Fiber Basic Plus ₹599 plan is open for all across India. Both the new and existing customers can avail this super affordable 599 plan.

      BSNL Fiber Basic Plus ₹599:

If we get into the details, the BSNL Fiber Basic Plus ₹599 is a new unlimited FTTH plan available across all telecom circles with immediate effect. Under this plan, the user gets 60Mbps download speed with a FUP limit of 3.3TB. Post 3300MB usage, the speeds get reduced to 2Mbps.

Apart from the unlimited internet facility, the user gets unlimited free voice calls to any network within India.
By observing the benefits and availability, this is one of the best affordable plans available for the users across India. The best thing of BSNL Fiber Basic Plus ₹599 is it being competitive enough despite JioFiber and AirtelXsteam dominating the market.

Leaving Andaman & Nicobar Telecom Circle, all the BSNL circles will be providing this affordable plan to its customers. The telecom player is collecting one-month rental as the security deposit.

      BSNL Fiber Basic Plus ₹449:

Interestingly, the BSNL Bharat Fiber has revised Fiber Basic 449 plan. It now offers 30Mbps speed with a FUP limit of 3.3TB downloadable data. Post the 3300MB usage, the speed will be throttled to 2Mbps.

As usual, the above plan offers unlimited voice calling across all networks in India. Except for the Andaman & Nicobar BSNL Telecom Circle, the plan is open for all new and existing customers.

As per the reliable sources, this BSNL Fiber Basic 449 plan will be available only for the first 6 months. Later on, the subscribers will be migrated to the BSNL Fiber Basic Plus 599 plan that comes with 60Mbps speed.

It’s again a win-win situation for both the customers and BSNL alike.

      alt text

The AP government has taken it as a prestigious project to offer internet services to the remotest part of the state. The Jagan Reddy government is very keen on offering AP Fibernet services in tribal areas where it is even difficult to get 2G signals.

Without the internet, it is highly impossible to effectively implement Grama Ward Sachivalayam system in the tribal areas. Thus, the AP Government took all the steps to offer internet services to every tribal village through AP Fibernet Corporation.

In this process, the AP Government has already sanctioned ₹3 crore funds to the concerned Fibernet Corporation.

The Rapid Rate of Change in Tribal Areas in terms of Connectivity:

The work-related to fibernet connectivity has already started in 134 tribal hamlets. Currently, the fibernet infrastructure work is spread across 51 villages in Rampachodavaram ITDA (East Godavari district), 49 villages in Parvathipuram ITDA (Vizianagaram District), 26 villages in Paderu ITDA (Visakhapatnam District), 6 villages in Srisailam ITDA (Kurnool district), and 1 village in K.R.Puram ITDA (West Godavari District) and 1 village in Chintoor ITDA (East Godavari District).

Reliance 4G Connectivity in Hilly Tribal Areas of AP:

In association with Reliance Jio Infocomm, the AP Government has already set up over 200 towers in these hilly tribal areas. With this, the agency areas including tribal hamlets are now geared up with Reliance Jio 4G wireless broadband services.

In an effort to facilitate internet services, the Tribal & Welfare Ministry has sent proposals to set up AP Fibernet infrastructure in 251 tribal hamlets. As per the Ministry, it requires ₹ 24.50 crore budget for the same. Thus, the government has taken every step to clear the hurdles in ensuring Fiber connectivity to the remotest corner in the state.

    • Jio 2599 Annual Recharge Offers Disney+ Hotstar (at No Extra Cost)

      alt text

These days telecom companies are trying to make bundle packs by offering OTT subscription. The Reliance Jio is no exception. The 4G VoLTE player is now offering Disney+ Hotstar subscription on a few prepaid packs.

Let’s go through each pack and get the comprehensive details:

      Reliance Jio 598 Prepaid Plan:

The Reliance Jio 598 pack offers 2GB/day 4G data and 100 SMS/day for a period of 56 days. This recharge plan also packs 1-year Disney+ Hotstar subscription worth ₹399 at no extra cost.

As usual, the user gets unlimited Jio-Jio voice calling and 2000 minutes for Jio to Non-Jio calls. Moreover, the daily 2GB/day accounts to 112GB 4G high-speed data. Post the FUP, the speed is throttled to 64 kbps.

It’s to be noted that there’s a regular Jio 444 plan that offers daily 2GB data, unlimited Jio calling and 2000 non-Jio minutes. That means, if you want Disney+ Hotstar subscription, then pay the difference of ₹154.

      Reliance Jio 777 Prepaid Plan:

With daily 1.5GB data, you get another Disney+ Hotstar bundled pack. This has a validity of 84 days. Along with 5GB data as complimentary, this prepaid plan offers a total of 131GB data.

In this pack, the user gets 3000 minutes of non-Jio.

      Reliance Jio 2599 Prepaid Plan:

Similarly, there’s annual plan ₹2599 that offers daily 2GB data and 100 SMS per day for a period of 365 days. Along with daily 2GB data, there’s a 10GB complimentary pack on this Jio ₹2599 recharge plan.

That means the subscriber gets a total of 740GB data. Post the daily 2GB FUP, the speed reduces to 64kbps.

Along with Unlimited Jio calls, the user gets 12000 minutes Jio to Non-Jio calls. Disney+ Hotstar subscription worth ₹399 is the additional benefit.

Similarly, there’s an annual ₹2399 plan that offers daily 2GB data and 100 SMS per day. It also packs unlimited Jio calling and 12000 minutes for non-Jio calls.

Here, the Reliance Jio has charged ₹200 extra when compared to the regular annual pack. However, the complimentary 10GB pack brings down the difference to ₹100.

Jio – Disney+ Hotstar Subscription Packs:

Jio Prepaid Recharge Plans Validity Total Data Data/day Jio-Jio non-Jio Minutes OTT Benefit
      Jio 598 56 Days 112GB 2GB/day Unlimited 2000 Disney+ Hotstar
      Jio 499 Cricket Pack 56 Days 84GB 1.5GB/day NO NO Disney+ Hotstar
      Jio 444 56 Days 112GB 2GB/day Unlimited 2000 NO
      Jio 2599 365 Days 740GB 2GB/day Unlimited 12000 Disney+ Hotstar
      Jio 2399 365 Days 730GB 2GB/day Unlimited 12000 NO
      Jio 777 84 Days 131GB 1.5GB/day Unlimited 3000 Disney+ Hotstar
      Jio 555 84 Days 126GB 1.5GB/day Unlimited 3000 NO
      Jio 401 28 Days 90GB 3GB/day Unlimited 1000 Disney+ Hotstar
      Jio 349 28 Days 84GB 3GB/day Unlimited 1000 NO

      What’s Your Opinion?

      alt text

When the telecom companies specify at no extra cost, one should consider that there’s something hidden. In reality, the hidden things are much costlier than the regular ones.

Say for example, by paying an extra ₹154, you get Disney+ Hotstar subscription along with your regular pack. This comes with 56 days of validity. So, if you want to enjoy Disney+ Hotstar subscription for the whole year, you need to recharge this Jio 598 bundled pack for 6.5 times.

That brings our extra spent value to ₹1003 (154x6.5). Instead, you can straightaway purchase Disney+ Hotstar subscription at ₹399 thereby saving ₹604.

There are about 10 recharge plans in Reliance Jio Prepaid segment that are bundled with Disney+ Hotstar subscription. Except for the annual plan, all other plans do charge for the OTT benefit in the name of FREE.

In contrary, the Reliance Jio 2599 Prepaid annual pack saves ₹300 and is a better pack to opt.

Do you agree with my opinion? Share your thoughts.

    • Google to Roll Out E2E Encryption for Messages (Open for Beta Users)

      alt text

The search engine giant Google will roll out E2E encryption for Android users after its beta testing. One can expect End-to-End encryption for Google Messages over the next year.

The end-to-end encryption will make it harder for anyone to read the content. The Google claimed that E2E encryption of Android Messages will soon facilitate that no one will be seeing the content in it including Google, Law Enforcement and third parties.

This important decision is considered to be a part of Google’s move to upgrade traditional SMS to Rich Communication Services (RCS). When the world is moving from standard SMS to instant-chat age, the telecom companies are still stuck at the SMS age.

Thus, Google wants to upgrade it by facilitating additional features like the inclusion of images and videos in Rich Communication Services (RCS). To the unaware, Messages is Google’s official app for texting (SMS, MMS) and chat (RCS).

Moreover, the global popularity of WhatsApp compelled Google to roll out End-to-End Encryption for Android Messages. When Apple can have its own E2E encryption in the form of iMessage, there’s a desperate need for Google Messages to have E2E.

How to Have End-to-End Encryption in Android Messages:

Thus, when last year Google rolled out offering RCS servers, E2E for Google Messages was on the cards. Starting this month, beta testers can avail E2E encryption on Android Messages.

The global roll-out could be a slow process or in a phased manner. Immediately after the best-testing, or at least by early 2021, the E2E encryption upgrade feature will be rolled out globally.

This End-to-End encryption will be automatically served when both parties are using Android Messages with Chat active within Messages.

Pros & Cons of E2E Encryption:

As such this E2E encryption is the need of the hour. The digital right activists and civil liberties groups are strongly in favour of the privacy and security of all internet users. This is of more importance when cybercriminals and government are snooping the day-today activities of internet users.

However, the other side of the coin is law enforcement agencies’ argument that technology is being misused and strong encryption could hinder criminal investigations.

Though there are both pros and cons of End-to-End Encryption, one should remember that Google’s Android Messages is not the first one to implement.

Apple has its own iMessage chatting platform that has got E2E encryption. Other independent platforms include WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal etc.

Thus, let’s dump the 30-year old standard SMS which is increasingly insecure and bring E2E Android Messages. Hope Google can wok out the cross-platform feature instead of just sticking itself to Android.

    • VI 269 Prepaid Offers Unlimited Calling & 4GB Data (56 Days Validity)

      alt text

Vodafone Idea known for offering long-term plans has come up with a new 269 prepaid plan to its subscribers. The Vi ₹269 offers unlimited voice calling and 4GB data.

Generally, the subscribers are of 3 types. One looking for heavy data and the other looking for heavy voice calling. The third is a balanced type that uses both voice calls and data but on a moderate level.

      Vi ₹269 Prepaid Pack:

That’s the reason, the telecom companies generally offer bundled packs to cater to the needs of balanced users. However, the Vodafone Idea has chosen Vi ₹269 prepaid pack to serve the needs of heavy voice callers.

The Vi ₹269 prepaid pack ships unlimited calls (local, STD and roaming) to all networks within India. Apart from unlimited calls, it offers 4GB data (4G/3G/2G depends on feasibility) and 600 SMS benefits for a period of 56 days.

Here, the validity of the Vi ₹269 prepaid pack as mentioned above is 56 days. Apart from the above benefits, the company offers free access to Vi Movies & TV.

Undoubtedly, this is an affordable plan from Vodafone Idea team. While considering the competition, both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio do not offer such packs under ₹300.

Other Plans in Vi Prepaid Portfolio:

In a similar note, there’s a Vi ₹149 prepaid plan that offers unlimited voice calling, 3GB data and 300 SMS benefits with a validity of 28 days.

The Vi ₹379 pack offers truly unlimited voice calls, 6GB data and 1000 SMS with a validity of 84 days.

If you are desperately looking for a truly long-term pack, then Vi ₹1499 serves the purpose. It ships 24GB data, 3600 SMS and unlimited voice call with a validity of 365 days.

Under ₹125 per month, this is truly an affordable annual plan. I do agree that all the telecom players do have a similar pricing strategy including rate cutters but Vi ₹269 is surely a good initiation from Vi conglomerate.

Vi Prepaid Plans with Unlimited Calls, Less Data and Long-Term Validity:

Prepaid Plan Voice Calls Data Benefit SMS Benefit Validity
Vi 269 Pack Unlimited Calls 4GB Data 600 SMS 56 Days
Vi 149 Pack Unlimited Calls 3GB Data 300 SMS 28 Days
Vi 379 Pack Unlimited Calls 6GB Data 1000 SMS 98 Days
Vi 1499 Pack Unlimited Calls 24GB Data 3600 SMS 365 Days

    • RE: Google Pixel 4a at ₹29999 (From 16 Oct on Flipkart)

Undoubtedly, Google Pixel 4a is the best mid-range handset available globally. Starting from its compact size to the Pixel camera’s every aspect has got good reviews. However, the only disappointing thing is its colour.

      Barely Blue Google Pixel 4a:

It’s to be noted down that Google Pixel 4a is available only in one colour that too Just Black. To add colour to its product lineup, the search engine has added Barely Blue coloured variant.

Surprisingly, this limited edition smartphone will be available in the US and Japan.

As everyone would be expecting bright blue but instead the Google gave a pale baby blue that looked dull. However, this is a great option to buy a limited edition colour. Moreover, Google should consider making it available globally.

Leaving it aside, Google should have picked some Radiant Red colour as a limited edition. That would be really crazy!

      alt text

The Indian smartphone manufacturer Micromax is back in the business with a new sub-brand “In”. Under the new IN 1 lineup, the company has launched the IN Note 1 and IN 1B.

Both the handsets are powered by MediaTek chipsets. Amidst Indian patriotism and Made-in-India programme, the Micromax has relied on IN series to make affordable handsets.

Apart from the affordable price tag, the stock Android OS is the other USP of the new Micromax IN series. Both the handsets offer pure Android experience with no bloatware and guaranteed updates for the next 2 years.

      Micromax In Note 1 Specifications:

      alt text

Regarding the Micromax In Note 1, the front panel sports a 6.67-inch LCD with Full HD+ punch-hole display. Powered by MediaTek Helio G85 gaming chipset and 4GB RAM, it houses 64GB/128GB internal space along with microSD card support.

On the optics front, there is a 48MP AI Quad Camera with 48MP primary camera, 5MP wide-angle camera, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor. For the selfies, there’s a 16MP wide-angle lens.

Don’t know how the camera reacts in real conditions, but the company boasts that it is well equipped with Night Vision to click during low-light hours.

As told earlier, Micromax In Note 1 boots Android 10 out-of-the-box. There’s an exclusive Google Assistant button on the left side and fingerprint scanner on the back.

Fueled by 5000mAh battery and 18W fast charging (and also reverse charging), the Micromax In Note 1 supports USB-C port and reverse charging. It’s a dual 4G VoLTE handset that offers all connectivity options including 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth v5.0, etc.

As told earlier, this handset too boots stock Android 10 and guaranteed upgrades for 2 years. It seems the Micromax is trying to get Android One status. Everyone wants pure Android experience rather than a modified user interface filled with ads and bloatware.

Leaving it aside, the Micromax IN 1B handset is backed by a big 5000mAh battery. However, it is just limited to 10W fast-charging through USB-C port but gets reverse charging facility.

All other connectivity options remain same including triple tray supporting dedicated slot for microSD card and 3.5mm audio jack.

Starting November 26, one can grab the handset in two storage options 2/32GB and 4/64GB priced at INR 6999 and INR 7999 respectively on Micromax website and eCommerce portal Flipkart.

By going through the specs, the Micromax IN 1b could be easily the best gaming handset of 2020. This pricing will give a nightmare to Xiaomi and Realme.

      alt text

In spite of having low-cost touch screen display phones, there is a great demand for feature-rich keypad handsets. This sort of trend is observed at a greater length in developing nations like India.

To satisfy their demand, the HMD Global has got Nokia feature-rich phones that work on 4G technology for faster connectivity experience. The Finnish mobile phone company has released Nokia 8000 4G and Nokia 6300 4G handsets.

Surprisingly, these low-cost 4G handsets support popular apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps, YouTube and Assistant. Built on KaiOS, both Nokia 8000 4G and Nokia 6300 4G handsets will be available in all global markets including India.

Design-wise, the Nokia 6300 4G makes us nostalgic with the old 2006 version. Let’s check what HMD Global has packed in Nokia 8000 and Nokia 6300 handsets.

      Nokia 8000 4G Specifications:

The Nokia 8000 series will sport a 2.8-inch display (320 X 240p) with QVGA resolution. Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 chipset and 512MB RAM, it houses a 4GB internal storage. Surprisingly, this has got a 2MP still camera.

The storage functionality is expandable up to 32GB using a cheap microSD card. Connectivity-wise, it includes Wi-Fi hotspot, dual nano-SIM slots, A-GPS, headphone jack and FM radio. Available in Onyx Black, Citrine Gold colour, Opal White, and Topaz Blue colour, the Nokia 8000 4G handset will retail at $93 (₹6900 in Indian currency).

Backed by 1500mAh battery, this Nokia 8000 4G provides a standby up to 25 days on 4G connectivity.

      Nokia 6300 4G Specifications:

      alt text

The Nokia 6300 4G handset features a 2.4-inch LCD display with 320x240p resolution. Leaving VGA camera setup, all the other specs remain the same. Retailing at $58 (₹4300 in Indian currency), this feature-rich handset comes in Light Charcoal, White and Cyan Green colours.

Weighing just 104.7 grams, probably this is the lightest handset providing 4G experience.

When there’s a great demand for JioPhone, one can expect a similar acceptance for Nokia 4G handsets. However, a price of 3K would be more reasonable to get the mass appeal in both rural and urban market.

    • BSNL to Start Telecom Services in Mumbai & Delhi (On Trial Basis)

      alt text

Starting January 1st, the state-run telecom provider BSNL will be offering telecom services in Mumbai and Delhi. Till date, the other state-owned company MTNL is offering the telecom services in the two metro cities.

As per a report published by Business Standard, the BSNL will offer both fixed wireline and wireless services in Delhi and Mumbai. This would be on a trial basis and one would expect it to last for a minimum of 5-6 months.

      Upgrading to 4G Network:

Currently, BSNL operates its telecom services across India except for the two major metro cities Delhi and Mumbai. Hereafter, the BSNL will run both fixedline and wireless networks across India. BSNL has already identified 49,300 sites and upgraded them to 4G network.

By mid-2021, the BSNL 4G services would be expanded in a phased manner. This includes more than 7,000 new sites that are exclusively allocated to MTNL covering telecom circles.

As we all know that the Government of India is planning to merge both BSNL and MTNL. In such a scenario, the MTNL will function as a virtual network operator for BSNL. Leaving the issue of 8 per cent license fee, everything has been sorted out.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) should work towards maximizing the potential benefit instead of increasing the expenditure in the form of Virtual Network Operator (VNO) proposal.

Mandatory Usage of BSNL in Government Departments:

Recently, the Government has made it mandatory to use state-run telecom network BSNL and MTNL in all the government departments including ministries, central Public sector undertakings (PSUs), autonomous bodies under Central Govt.

It’s not just limited to fixedline wired connections. For all internet, broadband, landline, and wireless network, the BSNL and MTNL should be the first stop.

Undoubtedly, this is a BIG step meant for BSNL’s revival. As per the latest data supplied TRAI, the BSNL and MTNL have a market share of just 10.65% in the wireless segment.

In the wireline market, the BSNL and MTNL combo has got 55.18% market share as on 31st August 2020.

      alt text

The State-run telecom has been trying all to improve its customer base by revising popular plans. From hereafter, the BSNL subscribers of Bharat Fiber 777 plan will enjoy 100Mbps speed.

Double the Speed with 500GB CUL Plan:

The ailing PSU is bringing attractive offers to lure new customers across India. The 500GB CUL plan which is popular as the BSNL 777 Plan will now offer 100Mbps speed instead of its regular 50Mbps.

Though the BSNL mentions it as a PAN-India plan, users from Andaman & Nicobar and Gujarat Telecom circles are left out.

Apart from this 500GB CUL plan, BSNL Gujarat Telecom Circle has officially withdrawn two other FTTH plans including 50GB CUL and 120GB CUL.

For the unaware, the 500GB CUL plan offers 50Mbps internet speed till 500GB. Post the usage of FUP limit, the speed reduces to 2Mbps. Apart from the internet, the user gets unlimited calling facility that includes both local and STD.

After the revision, the same 500GB CUL Plan will now offer 100Mbps internet speed till 500GB. Post the usage of 500GB limit, the speed reduces to 5Mbps (instead of regular 2Mbps). As usual, the unlimited calling benefit remains the same.

      Bharat Fiber Value Plan 799:

This speed up-gradation will surely benefit the BSNL FTTH subscribers. Though it’s not a promotional plan, the BSNL has specified that the plan will be functional till 2nd January 2020.

If one closely monitors this 500GB CUL plan and compares it with the newly launched BSNL Fiber Value Plan 799, there’s a notable markup.

The BSNL Fiber Value 799 Plan offers up to 100Mbps internet till 3300GB. Post the usage of 3.3TB data, speed gets reduced to 2Mbps. The unlimited calling is complimentary.

If you are a power user, then go with BSNL Fiber Value 799 plan, it will not disappoint you.

    • Netflix, Amazon Prime & Other OTT Platforms Now Under Govt Regulation

      alt text

In a new development, the Government of India has brought online mediums (including OTT platforms and digital news portals) under the Ministry of I&B. Hereafter, the online films and audio-visual programmes on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar will be under regulation by the government.

A cabinet secretariat notification was issued with immediate effect. And thus, the law was signed by the President Ram Nath Kovind. Under this, the video streaming service providers including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar will be under the ambit of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.

Digital Content Will Now Be Regulated:

Incidentally, there is no law in India that governs digital content. Whereas the other forms of content are being regulated by Press Council of India (print media regulator), the Central Board of Film Certification (films regulator) and the News Broadcasters Association (news channels regulator).

Citing the need for such regulation, the Ministry has been considering government-imposed censorship like China and Singapore.

      A Good Initiative:

Apart from OTT platforms, online portals dealing with news, film and current affairs will now be monitored, regulated and certified. Indeed, this is a good initiative by the Union Government. With COVID-19 pandemic, filmmakers don’t have any other option except to release their movies on the OTT/Streaming platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, Hotstar, Netflix.

Not just movie streaming, these OTT platforms are into the production and release of short movies, feature films, documentaries, and web series.

Interestingly, none of the above streaming services has signed the self-regulatory code provided by the I&B Ministry. They just prohibited the content that promotes child pornography, terrorism, disrespect to national flag and emblem. However, there’s much beyond this moral code.

      alt text

Though Samsung Galaxy M21 was introduced in March, the South Korean electronics giant didn’t bring the successor to it. After a gap, the company announced Galaxy M21s with upgraded cameras.

The latest Samsung Galaxy M21s gets 64MP primary camera and 32MP selfie shooter. If you get into the Galaxy M21 the handset was super successful with 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide, and 5MP depth sensor.

In short, the Samsung retains most of the specs except the camera configuration.

      Samsung Galaxy M21s Specifications:

Regarding specifications, the Samsung Galaxy M21s sports a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display (1080x2340pixels) with Exynos 9611 chipset. Backed by a 6000mAh battery and 15W fast charging, the handset boots Android 10 out-of-the-box.

The smartphone houses 4GB RAM and 64GB inbuilt space that can be expanded further up to 1TB using a microSD card.

Clad in Black and Blue colours, the Samsung Galaxy M21s is priced at BRL 1529 ($275/₹20499). The availability of Galaxy M21s is not reported yet but one can surely expect it by this month-end.

      Rebranding, the New Mantra:

Specs-wise, the Samsung Galaxy M21s looks to be a rebranded version of Galaxy F41.

The Galaxy F41 is itself based on Galaxy M31. By going through these specs, one can easily conclude that Samsung is also running out of ideas and thus rebranding the smartphones as the Chinese makers do.

      Samsung Galaxy M51 Also Announced:

The South-Korean electronics giant has also released Galaxy M51 in the Brazil market. Surprisingly, this 6.7-inch handset is powered by Snapdragon 730G SoC. It sports Super AMOLED Plus display and has 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM.

Fueled by 7000mAh battery and 25W fast charging support, this 64MP quad-camera handset costs ₹22,999 and ₹24,999 for 6GB and 8GB variants respectively. Currently, the Samsung Galaxy M51 is released in Electric Blue and Celestial Black colours.

It’s a known fact that Samsung has been flooding Exynos 9611 chipset in most of its handsets. Instead, the company should consider Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset.

On the contrary, Samsung is making all efforts to convince Xiaomi and Realme to make their handsets with Exynos chipsets.

      alt text

After releasing Wing and Velvet handsets, LG Electronics is back into the Indian market. The South Korean electronics giant has now released three new W-series smartphones namely LG W11, LG W31 and LG W31+.

Unlike the previous Velvet smartphone, the new W-series handsets are meant for the budget segment. They are priced ₹9490, ₹10,990 and ₹11,990 respectively. Interestingly, all the three handsets will be available in Midnight Blue colour.

LG W11, LG W31 and LG W31+ Specifications:

There’s nothing great about their specifications. LG has got a large screen and multi-camera setups to sell these budget handsets. Moreover, they do get a dedicated Google Assistant button.

The LG W11 sports a 6.52-inch LCD panel with a waterdrop notch on the top. Powered by MediaTek Helio P22 chipset, it has 13MP primary lens and 2MP depth sensor on the rear. There’s an 8MP front camera for selfies.

Just for the sake of releasing smartphones is ** not the right strategy**. LG India should get into the basics and do some market research before announcing these mediocre products.
