    • Nokia PureBook X14 Notebook Launched (Flipkart Exclusive @₹59990)

      alt text

Nokia has tied up with the Walmart owned Indian retail giant Flipkart and launched a notebook for the Indian market. After several years, the 155-year-old iconic Finnish company is back in the hardware business.

The launch of Nokia PureBook X14 notebook makes a grand entry into the Indian laptops segment. Powered by 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor and UHD 620 integrated graphics, the 14-inch full HD screen Nokia’s laptop features a magnesium-aluminium alloy body and weighs just 1.1kg.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr Vipul Mehrotra, Vice President (Nokia Brand Partnerships), said: “We are excited to offer consumers in India a Nokia branded laptop which brings innovation to address a gap in the market, as well as the style, performance and reliability that the Nokia brand is known for.”

Starting December 18th, this Flipkart-exclusive Nokia PureBook X14 will be available for preorders at a price of $815 (₹59,990). Clad in a matte black finish, the Nokia PureBook X14 comes with Windows 10 Home Plus OS pre-installed and HD IR webcam with Windows Hello Facial Recognition.

Specifications of Nokia PureBook X14 Notebook:

      alt text

Specs-wise, the Nokia PureBook X14 sports a 14-inch full HD IPS display (1920 x 1080p) with Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR), 86% screen-to-body ratio, and 250 nits peak brightness. Powered by an Intel Core i5 10th-Gen processor and 8GB DDR4 RAM, it houses a 512GB NVMe SSD.

The graphics part is handled by integrated Intel UHD 620 Graphics with 1.1GHz turbo speeds. The Nokia notebook supports 4K and Dolby Atmos support for headphones. Thus, it can be used for graphic related work as well.

As per the sales page, the connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Di, Bluetooth 5.1, two USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2.0, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, an HDMI port, Ethernet jack, audio output, and a MIC In port. Backed by a 46.7WHr battery and 65W charger, the PureBook X14 notebook lasts for 80 hours on a single charge.

      Nokia Laptop: What’s Your Opinion?

By launching Nokia PureBook X14 notebook in the Indian market, Nokia wants to regain its lost market. With the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a good rise in the sales of laptops and thus the Indian PC market registered recorded an impressive growth rate of 9.2% in Q3 of 2020.

As per the IDC Market Research report, over 70% of the Indian PC market is dominated by HP, Lenovo and Dell. Let’s hope Nokia makes its re-entry a memorable one.

Instead of just relying on Intel SoC, Nokia should have released a Ryzen version too. As per the industry experts, the Nokia PureBook X14 notebook is slightly overpriced. The company should consider the manufacturers like Asus and Acer who provide similarly configured machines at a much lower price.

    • 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G all led to 5G (Everything you Need to Know)

      alt text

With the recently concluded India Mobile Congress, there has been a widespread talk over 5G. The IMC 2020 is the foremost platform for telecommunications. The 3-day conference served as a platform for India’s start-up and technology ecosystem.

Though there were many such international forums and exhibitions before this the IMC 2020 grabbed maximum attention. The reason behind this is the 5G announcement from India’s richest person Mukesh Ambani. His company Reliance Jio Infocomm is ready to bring 5G network to India in 2021.

Though Bharti Airtel’s chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal is of the opinion that India would take another 2-3 years to get 5G-ready, the new wireless network technology has gained momentum.

In this context, it is worth considering to know the different generations and terminology used in the present and past wireless network technologies.

1G (First Generation of Wireless Cellular Technology):

Launched in 1979, the IG refers to the first generation of wireless cellular technology. It was used for voice communication. The 1G delivered analog voice and thus there was no data transmission.

      2G (Second-Generation Cellular Network):

Launched in Finland in 1991, the 2G networks are digital. It provided both voice and data communication services. With General Packet Radio Service (better known as GPRS), 2G offers a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 40 kilobits per second (kbit/s).

However, the EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), there is a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 384 kbit/s.

Though many parts of the world are shutting down 2G services, Indian population especially in rural areas is still dependent on them. It has been reported that close to 300 million still use 2G mobile networks in the Indian subcontinent.

Bharti Airtel, the second-largest carrier in India, shut down their 3G network. while they have no plans to shut down 2G services. The US-based Verizon plans to shut down their 2G and 3G CDMA-based network by 31 December 2020.

Terminating 2G services could leave vulnerable people who rely on 2G infrastructure without means to access emergency contacts, leading to preventable deaths.

      alt text

      3G, Short for Third Generation:

Though the first commercial 3G network was introduced by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in 2001, India adopted a bit later. On 11 December 2008, the first 3G mobile and internet services were launched by MTNL in Delhi and Mumbai metropolitan cities.

Later on, the BSNL started deploying the 3G networks all over the country. Technically, the 3G is the upgrade for 2.5G GPRS and 2.75G EDGE networks for providing faster data transfer.

Thus, the term “mobile broadband” got introduced as it facilitated faster internet browsing. Though one could watch videos and stream music, it was not hassle-free and involved a lot of buffering.

The 3G downlink data speeds defined by telecom service providers varied depending on the underlying technology deployed.

      They are as follows:

      • up to 384kbit/s for WCDMA
      • up to 7.2Mbit/sec for HSPA
      • up to 21.6 Mbit/s for HSPA+

In the Indian market, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea has already started shutdown of the entire 3G network in many parts of the nation. However, the state-run telecom BSNL operates 3G services across the nation since it doesn’t have a 4G spectrum.

4G, The Fourth Generation of Broadband Cellular Network Technology:

The 4G system relies on all-Internet Protocol (IP) based communication such as IP telephony instead of the traditional circuit-switched telephony service. Along with IP telephony, the 4G has got its footprint in HD TV streamed multimedia, video conferencing, 3D television, and gaming services.

      Data speeds of LTE-Advanced

      • Peak download 1000 Mbit/s
      • Peak upload 500 Mbit/s

The world’s first Long Term Evolution (LTE) branded as 4G service was opened to the public in Stockholm (Sweden) and Oslo (Norway) on 14 December 2009. However, it came to India in 2012.

Bharti Airtel became the first company in India to offer 4G services. On 10 April 2012, it started offering 4G through dongles and modems using TD-LTE technology in Kolkata. Later on, Airtel 4G was launched on mobile from February 2014 in Bengaluru.

The entry of Reliance Jio on 5th September 2016 changed the whole telecom industry and gave it a new shape. Jio is India’s only pure-play 4G network provider across all 22 telecom circles.

Within 3 years, it became the largest mobile network operator in India and eventually became the third-largest operator in the world with over 405.6 million subscribers.

      5G Wireless Technology:

It’s important to note that 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G all led to 5G, which is designed to provide more connectivity than was ever available before.

The latest 5G is the fifth generation of cellular networks. It enables a new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices without lag.

Speed-wise, the 5G is faster than 4G. It can deliver up to 20 Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) peak data rates and 100+ Megabits-per-second (Mbps) average data rates. As of July 3, 2019, mmWave had a top speed of 1.8 Gbit/s on AT&T’s 5G network.

      alt text

      The Future of 5G:

Apart from just downloading a full-length HD movie in seconds, 5G is much significant than thought. It connects things virtually everywhere without lag. Thus, people can measure, understand and manage things in real-time.

The global operators have started launching new 5G networks in early 2019. As of now, 5G has been deployed in 35+ countries and counting.

Reliance Jio’s dream of a 2G-free India is a nightmare for the telcos. In the recently concluded India Mobile Congress 2020, Mr Mukesh Ambani advocated that the GoI needs to take necessary policy steps to make 2G a part of history.

He reiterated that there’s an urgent need to accelerate the migration of 350 million Indian who currently use a 2G phone to an affordable smartphone. If it happens, Jio would be the sole company to be benefitted and eventually impact the other incumbent operators including Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL-MTNL.

      Prepare for the 2G/3G Sunset:

      alt text

If 2G network is shut down, what will happen to Airtel’s 130 million 2G subscribers and Vi’s 60% 2G/3G subscriber base? Leave the financial challenges aside, are the Indian telecom networks ready to support 350 million additional data customers?

Instead, the Government along with network companies should formulate a phased approach to migrate the 2G users and close 2G.

There are several new 5G compatible handsets supporting the 5G network are available. For example, the first-ever all-5G smartphone Samsung Galaxy S10 5G was announced on 4 March 2019.

Recently, Apple too released the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro, the first line of Apple phones to support 5G connectivity. But a lot has to be done to make 5G technology affordable.

    • BSNL Unified License Extended for 20 Years (After BG Worth ₹250 Crore)

      alt text

The state-owned telecom player BSNL gets an extension of Unified License for 20 years by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This comes as a BIG relief to ailing BSNL.

The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of BSNL’s unified license as the latter submitted a bank guarantee worth 250 crores. Though the license has been approved with effect from 29 Feb 29 2020, the agreement was signed on December 10th.

      2G, 3G & 4G Services Across 20 Telecom Circles:

The DoT has mentioned that the license will be valid for 20 years unless revoked for reasons specified elsewhere in the document. With this issuance, the state-run BSNL will be able to provide 2G, 3G and 4G services across 20 Telecom circles.

As such the BSNL will get the required permission to offer telecom services across the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz spectrum bands. This will span all the telecom services including voice telephony, national long distance, international long distance, very small aperture terminal (VSAT), and the Public Mobile Radio Trunking Services (PMRTS).

      BSNL-MTNL Merger: A Delayed Imperative

      alt text

Moreover, the BSNL has also received permissions to offer telecom services in Mumbai metropolitan and Delhi-national capital region (NCR).

Thus, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) BSNL would manage the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) network in both Delhi and Mumbai metropolitan areas. This new development would facilitate a complete merger of the two PSU’s in the telecom sector.

The extension of Unified License is really good news for BSNL as it can now cater its services across the nation without any hiccups. It’s to be noted that BSNL is the only telecom operator to offer services in the remotest parts of the country without any thinking about profit margins.

    • OPPO Reno5 Series is Official (Pro Gets MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC)

      alt text

The Chinese smartphone maker OPPO Electronics has officially launched Oppo Reno 5 5G and Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G smartphones in its home country. The new Reno 5 series are the first handsets to boot Android 11 out-of-the-box.

Spec-wise, both the handsets look identical. However, the major difference is the inclusion of MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ processor. Starting December 18th, both the handsets are available for sale on JD.com.

As the name suggests, they are meant to be part of the 5G ecosystem. Let’s have a detailed analysis of each handset in Oppo Reno5 series.

      OPPO Reno5 5G specifications:

      alt text

It sports a 6.43-inch full HD+ OLED display with 1080x2400p resolution. Powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset (7nm) and 8/12GB RAM, the handset houses an inbuilt 256GB non-expandable storage.

Following the trend, the OPPO Reno5 5G handset sports a 90Hz refresh rate with 430 nits brightness. On the optics front, there’s a quad-camera setup at the rear with 64MP as the primary lens with f/1.7 aperture, 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, 2MP lens for macro and portrait snaps with f/2.4 aperture.

For selfies and video calling, there’s a 32MP selfie camera. Backed by a 4300mAh battery and 65W fast-charging support (reverse charging as well), the OPPO Reno5 5G handset boots ColorOS 11.1 based on the latest Android 11 operating system.

The smartphone comes in Glitter Blue, Aurora Blue, Midnight Black colour options and retails at 2699 yuan (approximately ₹30400) and the higher-variant costs 2999 yuan.

      OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G specifications:

      alt text

The Reno 5 Pro 5G variant gets a larger 6.55-inch FHD plus display with higher brightness 500nits. The refresh rate is up to 90Hz and touch sample rate is up to 120Hz. The core difference lies in the backing of high-end MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ processor.

Surprisingly, the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G also comes in 2 variants 8/128GB and 12/256GB. Even the camera configuration and other specs remain the same. There’s a slight change in terms of battery. It is backed by 4350mAh battery along with 65W super flash charge support.

The other noticeable difference is its support for advanced wireless connectivity including Wi-Fi 6 and NFC. The Reno 5 Pro 5G is priced at 3399 yuan (approximately ₹38290) and 3799 CNY (approx. ₹42,400) respectively.

The OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G comes in Star River Dreams, Aurora Blue, Moon Nights and Star Wish Red (New Year Edition).

      alt text

      What’s Your Opinion?

Undoubtedly, theirs is enthusiasm over the launch of OPPO Reno5 series. However, other than 5G, 90Hz OLED and 65W fast charging, I don’t see anything great in the OPPO Reno5 5G handset. A simple comparison would rate OnePlus Nord 5G as a better pick.

Similarly, one could try Realme X7 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro in this price range. But I would like to try the new MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ processor.

    • iPhone 11 Users to Get Display Module Replacement (for Touch Issues)

      alt text

Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has announced the good news to its iPhone 11 users. The company stated that it would offer a new screen replacement program for affected iPhone 11 units.

As the iPhone 11 users are experiencing touch screen and non-responding issues, the company has officially decided to offer free replacement of screen on affected iPhone 11 handsets. The company announced that iPhone 11 handsets that were made during November 2019 and May 2020 are experiencing a technical glitch.

As per the official reports, the problem in touch screen is primarily associated with an issue in the display module. Though the company says it’s a small percentage, there have been tons of complaints on Apple and Mac forums.

The company has set up a procedure to avail this free replacement of screen. The iPhone 11 users check whether their handset is applicable for this free program by using serial number.

How to Check Whether Handset is Applicable for Free Service?

If you are unaware of the serial number, then just tap settings -> General -> About.

One can directly enter their handset’s serial number on Apple’s website and get to know the details. If your device is eligible for the free display replacement program, then the Apple-authorized service provider will provide the service for free of cost.

Make sure you take a backup of your data in the iPhone. The company also advised that if the display is broken or cracked, then one should fix it before the touchscreen issue is serviced.

In case the Apple iPhone 11 user has already got repaired, then the Apple will provide a refund for the same.

      alt text

One thing is for sure, these days Apple is not having good quality control checks. By providing free repair service, Apple is taking responsibility otherwise it could face another lawsuit.

      alt text

The Vivo V20 Pro 5G is official now in the Indian market. Powered by the Snapdragon 765G chipset, the Vivo V20 Pro 5G is the slimmest 5G handset in the territory. Though the Chinese company launched the Vivo V20 series in the month of September, the release of Pro variant got delayed.

Priced at ₹29,990, the latest Vivi V20 Pro 5G will be available both online and offline partners including Croma, Reliance Digital, BigC across India. Interestingly, both Amazon India and Flipkart will be selling this 5G handset on their eCommerce platform.

Though Vivo V20 Pro 5G gets some features from the base variant Vivo V20, it has got all the Pro features to give a tough fight to OnePlus Nord 5G. Let’s go with the detailed specs sheet of Vivo V20 Pro 5G.

      Vivo V20 Pro 5G Specifications:

The Vivo V20 Pro 5G sports a 6.44-inch FHD+ AMOLED (2400x1080p) display that has a notch up. Made with AG Matte Glass, it has got 44MP wide and 8MP ultra-wide cameras at the front. There’s a super responsive fingerprint sensor for security and biometric purpose.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset and 8GB RAM, the Vivo V20 Pro houses a 128GB inbuilt storage space.

      44MP Dual Selfie Camera Setup:

      alt text

On the optics side, it features a triple camera setup that includes a 64MP primary camera, 8MP ultrawide and an exclusive 2MP depth sensor. As disclosed earlier, there’s a dual-camera setup for selfies and video calls.

The 8MP ultrawide snapper also functions as a macro lens where one can capture pics as close as 2.5cm from the object. The other PRO features of the camera include Super Night Mode, Motion Autofocus, Dual View Video, Double Exposure, Slo-Mo Selfie Video etc.

With FunTouch OS 11, the Vivo V20 Pro 5G is still on Android 10 but one can expect the latest version of Android 11 through OTA update. Weighing just 170 grams, this could be the lightest 5G handset.

Fueled by a decent 4000mAh battery, the Vivo V20 Pro 5G gets a 33W fast-charging support and USB-Type C port connectivity. Other connectivity options include support for Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi 802.11, 3.5mm headphone jack etc.

    • Excitel Offers 100Mbps Speed at ₹399 (Cheapest FTTH in the Market)

      alt text

The NCR-based Excitel offers the cheapest broadband plans in the Indian market. To be precise, the Excitel broadband internet service provider offers 100Mbps speed at just ₹399.

Though Excitel started its operations in 2015, the NCR-based startup couldn’t achieve the much-desired result. However, the COVID-19 gave the company a good opportunity to expand its services to suburbs where the big brands are not present.

Interestingly, the Excitel provides high-speed broadband connectivity at a lesser price than its competitors. Apart from being cheap, the Excitel broadband and fiber plans don’t carry any FUP or data limit.

Excitel No FUP & Dominance in Small Markets:

The USP of Excitel ISP is no Fair Usage Policy and speed capping.

The Excitel is currently available in 13 cities including Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Vijayawada, Rohtak, and Unnao.

Though the new ISP competes with Airtel Xstream, JioFiber, ACT Fibernet and BSNL Bharat Fiber, it has created a new niche for itself. By analysing its marketing strategy, one can clearly say that Excitel is picking up the small territories where the big brands are not yet operational.

Personally, I’ve observed this ISP over a period of 2 years. The Excitel is the front runner where the other ISP’s are still calculating the economies of scale for installing its infrastructure. In the last 2 years, the company doubled its customer base to 6 lakh subscribers.

      Excitel Fiber First Plans:

Under Fiber First branding, the Excitel has got many plans ranging from ₹399 to ₹999. The company has branded the plans based on the speed – 100Mbps (streamers), 200Mbps (downloaders), and 300Mbps (gamers).

The 100Mbps plan costs ₹699 per month whereas the 200Mbps plan costs ₹849 and the highest 300Mbps plan costs ₹999 per month. However, the same 100Mbps costs ₹399 and 300Mbps plan costs ₹499 effectively when paid annually. That’s a huge money saver for long-term enthusiasts.

Apart from monthly and annual plans, the Excitel ISP has got a range of plans including 3-month, 4-month, 6-month, and 9-months.

Different Plans Offered by Excitel ISP:

      alt text

What’s Your Opinion? Should I Switch to Excitel?

In terms of speed and cost, none can come close to Excitel’s offerings. However, there are many negative reviews regarding customer support. So I suggest the new users try monthly plans instead of paying annually in advance.

Being a new startup, the Excitel should look into customer support as well. Undoubtedly, Excitel broadband and FTTH plans are fast and affordable but need customer acceptance.

To the unaware, the Excitel Broadband is an Indo-European venture mainly funded by Bulgarian VC fund NEVEQ. Recently, Vivek Raina (Excitel Co-Founder and CEO) has infused capital from Impetus Capital, Black Peak Capital and NEVEQ.
