    • Bharti Airtel to Extend V-Fiber Broadband Operations to 10 More Cities

      alt text

Bharti Airtel’s V-Fiber broadband services would soon be expanded to 10 more cities in India. As per the latest reports, Bharti Airtel will roll out V-Fiber broadband services in Chandigarh, Delhi, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Noida, and Raipur.

Currently, Bharti Airtel’s new technology is limited to eight cities. Starting with Chennai, Bharti Airtel expanded the Fiber technology concept to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Indore, Mumbai, and Pune. And the telecom operator is committed to expanding this European technology to 87 major cities and towns in India.

      V-Fiber Broadband - Green Technology:

Bharti Airtel’s V-Fiber works on the concept of blending Fiber technology and Vectorization to provide broadband speeds up to 100Mbps. Though this green technology is quiet popular in Europe, Airtel is the first telecom service provider to introduce it in India. The beauty of V-Fiber broadband is it doesn’t require any drilling or wiring to install. Just enjoy the superfast broadband speed by installing a new modem priced at ₹1000.

This upgrade doesn’t attract any increase in monthly rental of your Airtel broadband connection. It is to be noted that the monthly rental plans of Airtel V-Fiber range from ₹999 to ₹4,999 with FUP limits 50GB to 1000GB per month. Moreover, it offers unlimited voice calling across the nation.

    • BSNL hopes to get 700 MHz Band Spectrum to Take on Rivals

      alt text

The state-run telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited hopes to get 700MHz band spectrum from the Indian government to cater high-speed 4G services to its subscribers. When the telecom industry is dominated by high-speed fourth generation, BSNL is still sticking on 3G due to its financial implications.

BSNL 4G on 700 MHz Band:

The BSNL has already made its appeal to the Department of Telecom to allocate the 5MHz block in 700MHz band spectrum on a revenue-sharing agreement. As per the infrastructure deployment, 700MHz band spectrum is the ideal spend to provide greater network coverage thereby having PAN-India 2G, 3G and 4G services with low capital spending.

Also Read: CMD Anupam Shrivastava Confirms BSNL 4G Rollout in 2017-18

Currently, the BSNL is providing 3G services through the 2100MHz band and is aiming to provide 4G technology through the classical LTE mode PAN-India including the rural areas. In a statement to Economic Times, BSNL Chairman & MD, Mr Anupam Shrivastava said: “We are hoping to get the 700 MHz band spectrum from the government through equity route. Whatever returns we get will be pumped back to the government.”

      Need of the Hour:

Mr Shrivastava added that the BSNL is looking to launch 4G services by April 2017 through the traditional spectrum course with the premium waves in the 700MHz band. The company will not find it difficult for tuning into the 700MHz band from the available 800MHz with its current equipment makers.

With reference to the ecosystem, Mr Shrivastava said that more than 40% of the devices manufactured worldwide will support 700MHz band. And when its 4G services are closer to launch, the ecosystem will get developed automatically to serve the needs of the customers.

With the entry of Reliance Jio, the private telecom companies including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, and Idea Cellular are investing heavily in the sector. This is again a big blow to the state-run BSNL. Hope the Government would listen to BSN’s woes and grant it 700MHz band spectrum to bail out.

Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, will soon launch ‘Locate My Device’ feature to track their smartphones using GPS. Though there is no official confirmation about the news, there are widespread reports about the service.

    • Airtel Payments Bank to Extend in AP, Telangana and Karnataka

      alt text

Airtel Payments Bank which started its pilot project in Rajasthan will now extend its services to South Indian states namely Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Bharti Airtel has planned around 35,000 Airtel outlets as banking points in these regions.

In a press statement, Bharti Airtel has reported that over 1 lakh customers have opened their saving accounts in Rajasthan with 70% of them in rural areas. It is to remind that over 10,000 Airtel retail outlets are serving as banking points with two-thirds of them being in rural areas.

Highlighting the achievement, Mr. Shashi Arora, MD and CEO, Airtel Payments Bank, said: “Our network allows us to take our banking services closer to the customer. We are also getting a good response from merchants and have further accelerated their onboarding.”

      Extending its Footprint:

Airtel Payments Bank, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, plans to build a network of 1 lakh merchants in Rajasthan alone by the end of this year. Prior to its PAN-India launch, Bharti Airtel plans to extend its pilot project to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.

The company has commissioned its retail outlets to act as banking points. With this, nearly 20,000 Airtel outlets will act as banking points in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. And over 15,000 company store outlets will function as banking points for Airtel Payments Bank.

Airtel Payments Bank, the first of its kind is offering basic banking services as per the guidelines of RBI. It is offering the highest annual interest rate of 7.25% to its savings account holders and a personal accident insurance of Rs 1 lakh per account. • Tariff War: Idea Cellular Also Offers Unlimited Voice Calls to Stay Competitive

      alt text

Staying competitive with Reliance Jio and Airtel, India’s third largest telecom operator Idea Cellular has announced free call schemes. Priced at ₹148 and ₹348, these prepaid packs provide unlimited voice calls to anywhere in India bundled with data.

      Free Voice Calling Tariff War:

The Idea prepaid packs resemble Airtel twin packs priced at ₹145 and ₹345 respectively. With ₹148 Idea prepaid pack, the subscribers can make local and STD calls only on company’s own network. While the higher ₹348 Idea pack offers unlimited voice calls (local and STD) to any network across the country. It is to be noted that the pricing of prepaid packs may slightly differ from circle to circle but have a validity of 28 days.

Addressing the launch of bucket packs, Mr. Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer, Idea Cellular, said: “As people in India get into the holiday mode, they will tend to stay better connected with their loved ones. Providing them with seamless connectivity at an affordable price point, we have launched these exciting voice packs that enable Idea prepaid users to make unlimited voice calls across the country. We hope they make the best out of this proposition.”

      Benefits of Idea ₹148 Pack:

The Idea Cellular subscribers can make free local and STD Idea-to-Idea calls across India. Along with free voice calls, a bundled 50MB of data is provided. Customers with 4G enabled smartphones will get 300MB of 4G data along with free voice calling benefit.

      Benefits of Idea ₹348 Pack:

This higher value pack offers free local and STD calls across all networks in the country with 50MB data. However, if the customer holds a 4G enabled handset then 1GB of data will be credited along with free voice calling benefit. As said earlier, both the packs will have a validity of 28 days.

      Survival for the Fittest:

Ever since the launch of Reliance Jio, the telecom operators are in jitters and have been strained to remain in the race. Undoubtedly, the consumer is the king and this is for the first time that telecom tariff plans are within the reach of the average customer. Though the prepaid customers account for more than 90% of India’s total mobile subscribers, it generates only 65-70% of the overall revenue of the telecom operators.

It is clearly evident that the incumbent players are trying to protect their lower revenue generating but high volume consumer base. However, it’s sad to acknowledge that Idea Cellular is just copy pasting Bharti Airtel’s plan and has nothing to innovate for its 186 million subscribers.

    • TRAI to Seek Comments on Scalable Public Wi-Fi Networks till December 9

Re: TRAI bats for Neutral Wi-Fi Architecture to improve Digital Connectivity

      alt text

The independent regulatory body TRAI has announced that it extended the deadline for comments on scalable public Wi-Fi networks to December 9, this year. The stakeholders are requested to submit their views and comments on or before December 9, 2016, in an electronic form.

Earlier on November 15, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) sought comments on neutral Wi-Fi infrastructure to facilitate broadband connectivity as a utility service in low-penetrated regions and bridge digital divide. November 25th was set as the deadline for the same.

In a statement, Mr. Sudhir Gupta, Secretary, TRAI, said, “Keeping in view the request of stakeholders for extension of time for sending their comments, it has been decided to extend the last date for submission of written comments up to 9th December, 2016.” He also added that no more requests would be entertained for the extension of submission of comments on the consultation paper.

TRAI Bats for Neutral Wi-Fi Infrastructure:

The TRAI has recommended deploying neutral Wi-Fi infrastructure to improve digital connectivity so that anyone irrespective of ISP can latch onto any Wi-Fi hotspot, pay and use the network accordingly. TRAI Chairman, Mr. R.S. Sharma, said that India with a mere 35,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots is lagging behind on a global scale. Incidentally, France is leading the internet world in terms of numbers of public Wi-Fi hotspots with 13 million.

The telecom services regulator is looking for the inputs on whether public Wi-Fi access providers should resell capacity and bandwidth to retail users and on the architecture it suggested for creating unified authentication and payment infrastructure.

    • Jio to Launch DTH Service at ₹185 per Month, Yet Another Rumour

      alt text

Rumors have been greatly exaggerated that Reliance Jio is about to launch DTH service on December 15. Surprisingly, the reports even stated that Jio DTH subscription would start from as low ₹185 per month and free for the first six months titled as ‘Jio Welcome Offer’.

Some reports even claimed that 350 channels package is half of the price what the incumbent players like Airtel Digital, Tata Sky, and Dish TV are charging.

Unfortunately, this rumor is spreading in the fastest possible way. As per the latest findings by RTN Asia, there has been no authentication from Reliance Jio or its parent company Reliance Industries to set up a distribution network for DTH service. There’s no real time involvement regarding procurement of the necessary infrastructure including dishes and set up boxes.

Moreover, the Jio Fiber connection is currently limited to metro cities like Chennai and Mumbai. Reliance Jio Infocomm will definitely take months or years to cater the service to 100 cities.

When it comes to the matter of dispensing the truth, Telecomm is aimed at providing the platform to discuss truth instead of sensationalism. There has been confusion and the difference between DTH and JioTV app is leading to the rumor. Reliance Jio subscribers are availing free access to premium applications including JioTV app on their smartphone. This output can be connected to your living room TV for a big-screen experience.

How to Get Reliance Jio DTH?

Even if the company is not providing Jio DTH services, you can make use of the existing JioTV app and watch your favorite TV programs on a big screen. Undoubtedly, this 80GB of 3G data at ₹4,498 is meant for loyal customers of BSNL across India. According to this long-term plan, the data cost would come down to ₹56 per GB with 365 days validity. Advantage BSNL:

Bharti Airtel’s long-term data plan would cost ₹5,770 for 80GB which is 30% more than BSNL’s plan. Similarly, Idea’s long term data scheme would cost ₹5,500 for 80GB with year validity. The only difference is these private operators offer 4G data if the 4G network is feasible in that area. While the state-run telecom company BSNL is offering the only 3G across all the telecom circles in India.

As per the report, the company has also launched three other data packs with 1-year validity. The BSNL subscribers can enjoy 60GB for ₹4.000, 36GB for ₹2,800 and 18GB for ₹1,500.
