    • TRAI bats for Neutral Wi-Fi Architecture to improve Digital Connectivity

      alt text

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended the government that neutral Wi-Fi architecture be deployed to improve digital connectivity. In a consultation paper, TRAI said that the country has too few Wi-Fi hotspots and added neutral Wi-Fi infrastructure is the need of the hour.

As per the data collected in 2014, France leads the world in terms of number of public Wi-Fi hotspots with 13 million and the United States comes in second at 9.8 million and UK third at 5.6 million. The situation is changing rapidly. And as per a recent study, there will be 340 million hotspots by 2018 on a global scale. But in India, it is just 35,000.

Wi-Fi Everywhere You Want To Be:

TRAI which is charged with ensuring the orderly growth of the telecom sector will soon recommend deploying neutral Wi-Fi infrastructure so that anyone irrespective of ISP can be able to latch on to any Wi-Fi hotspot, and use the network and pay accordingly. This will not only avoid duplication of infrastructure but also be a cheaper alternative for broadband connectivity to installing fibre.

The TRAI Chairman, Mr. R.S. Sharma, said, “Digital India is a most transformative project of the current government with a vision to change India into a knowledge economy. The fundamental area on which Digital India rests is a ubiquitous broadband connectivity or broadband as a utility service.”

      Improve Broadband Connectivity:

To recap, TRAI floated a consultation paper on the matter in July, with comments sought Broadband connectivity, a cornerstone of the government’s Digital India initiative, will depend on leveraging cable TV infrastructure, satellite bandwidth and executing BharatNet through the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model.

TRAI, the regulator of the telecommunications sector in India, has introduced important changes in telecommunications that benefited all consumers. Now, it has come up with a good recommendation to solve broadband connectivity problem protecting the interests of both telecom service providers and consumers.

      A Roadmap for Broadband Penetration:

“It may be surprise to many but India ranks below Bhutan, Kenya, Sri Lanka and Sudan in terms of broadband penetration. We need to seriously think about it and such measures taken jointly would lead to a substantial improvement in broadband connectivity and bridge digital divide”, the TRAI chief said.

      alt text

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will observe Swachh Bharat Mission in the first fortnight of November. Swachh Bharat Mission also known as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national campaign officially launched on 2nd October, 2014 by PM Narendra Modi.

Mr Manoj Sinha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said that the DoT will observe Swachh Pakhwada from November 1-15 to create a general awareness of the need for cleanliness in all walks of life. In connection with this Swachh Pakhwada, various activities would be conducted.

      India’s Biggest Ever Cleanliness Campaign:

The Indian Government is aiming to eradicate open defecation by 2nd October 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, Swachh Bharat Mission is India’s biggest ever cleanliness campaign involving 3 million government employees, school and college students across India covering 4,041 statutory cities and towns.

In addition to Department of Telecommunications (DoT), officials from various Public Sector Units and NGO’s will participate in this Swachh Pakhwada fortnight campaign. The state-run telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL will organize cleanliness drive at its offices spread across the country and will hold certain activities at Mumbai’s top tourist attraction, Gateway of India. Similarly, the staff of Department of Telecommunications will organize similar events at the selected tourist sites including Qutub Minar in Delhi.

      Swachh Pakhwada Special Cleanliness Drive:

The Swachh Pakhwada includes special cleanliness drives in the office building premises, departmental canteens, review and weeding out of old records, and disposal of unnecessary office material including e-waste.

The DoT has asked the private telecom companies to join the programme and conduct special cleanliness drives on different days during the fortnight of Swachh Pakhwada. The leading telecom provider, Bharti Airtel, has organized a mini marathon on November 20 in New Delhi.

    • Rail Tel Launches Google’s Free Wi-Fi at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station

      alt text

Rail Tel, a Miniratna enterprise of Government of India, commissioned high-speed Wi-Fi service at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station. Indian Railways in partnership with the tech giant Google has agreed to provide free public Wi-Fi service at 100 A1 and 1 category railway stations across India.

      God’s Own Country?

Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station joins the two other stations to go Wi-Fi after Ernakulam and Thrissur in the Indian state on Malabar Coast. Inaugurating the facility, Mr. Shashi Tharoor, MP, said, the new facility will take city station one step closer to world class standard. And it will provide easy access to the internet to around 40,000 passengers who commute through here daily.

Mr. Prakash Bhutani, Divisional Railway Manager, said, “The seamless connectivity will be available round the clock on this important rail hub of God’s own country”. Around 35 access switches are provided to maintain 20Mbps speed round the clock. As of now, the free Wi-Fi service is limited to 30 minutes and the customers who want to extend the unlimited connectivity will have to pay via credit or debit card.

      How to Avail Free Wi-Fi?

There is nothing technical in accessing Google’s free Wi-Fi. Just select Railwire network from the devices’ Wi-Fi settings. Then log on to railwaire.co.in through the mobile browser. Here, one needs to enter mobile number where you would get a four-digit OTP code as an SMS. Once the code is entered in the Wi-Fi login screen, then press DONE. Now, you are connected to high-speed free Wi-Fi.

Facing a bitter experience in Patna, there is a widespread opinion to block accessing of porn sites over free Wi-Fi at railway stations. However, there is no such blocking as of now and commuters can enjoy unlimited access without any restrictions. But if a Patna-like situation arises, the Rail Tel would take concrete steps to stop access to such sites.

    • Mobiles become Costlier in Assam due to Higher Entry Tax

      alt text

With a recent increase of entry tax, mobiles and other household items would become costlier in Assam. As per the latest amendment in The Assam Entry Tax Act 2008, the entry tax on the items is increased from the present 4 to 10 percent.

Having considered it necessary in the public interest so to do, the Government of Assam has specified that telecommunication equipment including telephones, mobile phones, pagers and component and parts thereof will attract the increased 10% entry tax.

      Not just Mobiles:

Apart from mobiles phones, this 10% Assam entry tax is on other consumer goods such as refrigerators, air coolers, geysers, washing machines, TV sets, DVD players, type writers, Xerox and fax machines, motor cars, motor cycles, elevators, sanity ware and furniture. Common PVC pipes, tubes and fittings, cranes, dumpers and road rollers attract 4% entry tax.

According to Mr. Ravi Kota, Commissioner & Secretary (Finance), Government of Assam, “This increase will stop diversion of trade. By this increase we are expecting to garner ₹40 crore annually.

Assam Entry Tax – Why? Why Not?

The main aim to levy Assam entry tax is to encourage the local industries and provide employment. However, there is a criticism that this law is counter-productive for the industrialization of the state.

Some economists are of the opinion that entry tax is leading to double taxation as the tax paid while entering the state is not VATable, or is not deducted while playing VAT by the unit. Some even feel that entry tax is making the industries of Assam less competitive by increasing its input costs.

      alt text

Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro will be available for sale in Samsung’s China store from November 11th. There’s no information on the availability of the handset in markets outside China.

Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro Design & Specs:

Starting with the exterior, the smartphone measures 162.9x80.7x6.9mm and features metal unibody design like other Samsung handsets. In addition, you can notice a new three string antenna design like Oppo’s R9s and R9s Plus. On the front, the phone features a huge 6-inch Super AMOLED display with 1920x1080 pixel resolution. As specified earlier, the star of the show is Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 653 processor with 6GB RAM, a first for Samsung phone and inbuilt 64GB storage space that is expandable up to 256GB via microSD card.

      Higher-end Imaging Specs:

On the camera front, Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro supports a 16-megapixel camera with f/1.9 aperture and a dual-LED flash and the same around back for bright selfies under low light conditions. Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro is available in Rose Gold and Gold color variants for 3199 Yuan (roughly ₹ 32K).

      Moving Ahead?

This is to be noted that a faulty Galaxy Note 7 will not stop Samsung from releasing new phones. And this has come right at a time when the world’s largest smartphone maker is struggling to make its lost reputation. The phone has got good specs and features to compete against the upper mid-range segment bosses OnePlus 3 and LeEco Le Max2.

    • TRAI: Jio Welcome Offer Valid Upto Dec 3, New Users to Get New Offers

      alt text

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has stated that the Mukesh Ambani-owned new telecom Reliance Jio cannot extend its free services beyond 90 days. The promotional Jio Welcome Offer (JWO) which was introduced on 5th September is limited only till December 3rd.

Jio Free Calls for Life-time Compliant?

In another twist in the tale, TRAI has given a clean chit to the new operator saying all its tariff plans, including free voice and data services, permissible, non-predatory, compliant with existing rules and not discriminatory at present. The TRAI has clarified the same in a letter to the heads of the incumbent operators such as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Telenor India and Videocon Telecom.

      alt text

However, it is to be noted that the new telecom operator didn’t make any mention of free voice calls for life time. Moreover, the company has mentioned 2 paise per second as tariff for voice calls. Thus, this free voice calls is a part of promotional offer and it can’t run beyond 90 days. If the sources are believed, Reliance Jio may file fresh tariff plans with TRAI to clear confusion regarding promotional offers.

      What Does it Mean?

So, for a common user, what does this mean? It states that Reliance Jio can have this promotional Jio Welcome Offer until December 3rd where the subscriber can enjoy unlimited free voice calls and unlimited data till December 31st. However, for the new subscribers post December 3rd, Reliance Jio will have to charge.

The company made a quick statement reacting that the consumers who have not subscribed services till 3rd December will be able to subscribe to new offers as well as tariff plans that are available from Jio. The company added, Jio voice calls on its network will remain free for lifetime and that’s a commitment given by Reliance Jio.

    • Indians Use Only 9 Mobile Apps Daily of 33 Total Installed

      alt text

A recent research conducted by Google alongside TNS has found that only 9 mobile apps are used by Indians even if they download 33 apps on their smartphones. The survey was conducted over 10,000 smartphone users in 10 countries in Asia Pacific region. The research led to understanding what drives their app behaviour.

The survey was conducted over 10,000 smartphone users in the age group of 18-64 to understand their app behaviour. The most prominent Asia Pacific countries were on the list including China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The study showcased that emerging markets have fewer installed apps compared to developed markets.

      Not Just App Stores:

Interestingly, App stores are not the only place to find the new apps. In India, 38% smartphone users discover apps through search. Apart from web browsing search, Indians also find the existence of new apps through family and friends and TV and print media ads. Before installing a new mobile app, the Indian look at the rating of the App, user reviews and App’s Size (relative to memory left on phone) is of prime importance.

Gaming apps are the most popular category installed by users across all Asian markets. It is followed by Education and books, comics and magazines etc.

      In-app Purchases:

Surprisingly, Indians top the list of users who make an in-app purchase or make a payment of app-related digital goods. About 77% are comfortable spending money on apps. It is to be remembered that 54% respondents are happy with the free content. On the other hand, 50% users are ready to buy with one-off payments and subscribe to a digital service.

The smartphone users in China, India, and Indonesia prefer mobile apps instead of websites for price comparisons.

      Relevancy:

Most users won’t keep an app if it is no longer useful. Thus, in the ever-growing market of apps, it is important to stay relevant otherwise the user will simply uninstall due to limited phone storage and competition. Give the customers a reason to stay installed.

    • Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon X50, the First 5G Modem Chipset Solution

      alt text

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc announced the world’s first commercial 5G modem chipset solution to deliver download speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second. In simple terminology, the 5G modem chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 will be roughly 500 times faster than the speed offered by the current 4G LTE technology.

Back in India, Airtel has been the pioneer in launching 4G services. Though Airtel launched 4G network in Kolkata in April 2012, the LTE services didn’t get any push till the big competitor Reliance Jio made a big entry with its pan-India 4G presence.

      A Virtual Reality Experience:

Technically, the present 4th generation LTE can offer 450 Mbps or even just 150 Mbps download speeds on our phones. If one is thinking what next, then Qualcomm has an answer for it in the form of Snapdragon X50 that can offer insane download speeds of up to 5 Gbps. Such a boost in connection speeds will let us enjoy super high-quality multimedia content within a fraction of seconds and make virtual reality.

As per the company, Snapdragon X50 5G modem can be coupled to any Snapdragon processor via an integrated Gigabit LTE modem. The first sampling for 5G modem will begin in the second half of 2017. This will definitely play a significant role in the development of 5G devices and networks. The company openly stated that it has tied up with many networking giants including Sweden’s Ericsson, American Netgear and Australian’s Telstra.
