    • Lenovo to Kill its Own Brand Name and Sell Moto in Smartphones Niche

      alt text

The latest developments surrounding consumer electronics indicate Lenovo has decided to kill its own brand name and sell Motorola brand in smartphones niche. If the reports are to be believed, the top management has taken this bold decision to phase out Lenovo brand for its phones.

When the Chinese multinational technology company, Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility for $2.91 billion in a cash-and-stock deal, it was announced that Motorola name would be phased out and get replaced with the ‘Moto’ brand. However, one can notice that Motorola brand still appears on packaging and also through its licensees.

Even after a year, Lenovo couldn’t chalk out a formidable plan to replace Motorola. Going by the popularity, Motorola is a much bigger brand when compared to Lenovo. Motorola is the American company which introduced mobile phones to people the world over in the early 2000s.

      Why Not Lenovo?

As per the latest developments in the Lenovo, it is clearly understood that the company is taking a selfless decision to promote popular brand name rather than keeping its interests on the front.

Personal computers are still the most important business vertical for Lenovo. In fact, Lenovo is the world’s largest personal computer vendor by unit sales. The company expanded significantly through the acquisition of IBM’s personal computer business including its ThinkPad and ThinkCentre lines of notebooks and desktops respectively.

With less than 6% share of the smartphone market, Lenovo was ousted from the top five worldwide smartphone market leadership. Moreover, the company has just $2 billion last year from its smartphones business. This clearly shows, Lenovo’s top-most priority would be the personal computers rather than smartphone business.

As per the 2016 Q2 reports, Samsung reasserted its global leadership followed by Apple and Huawei. Oppo and Vivo has been able to capture a strong brand presence and are listed 4th and 5th respectively.

Motorola Mobility - Advantage Brand Moto:

On contrary, Motorola has got a good name in the global market. Their recent product line has got stupendous success. Whether it is budget or high-cost, Motorola has got stronger branding for their smarphones. Moreover, there has been a lot of shuffling going on in their smartphones division. Key management positions are being transferred to PC, IT management and cloud business.

Though there is no official confirmation, insider reports suggest that Lenovo is killing its own brand name and nurture brand Motorola.

    • Currency Demonetisation: Telecos Extend Bill Payment Due Date by 3 Days

      alt text

The demonetisation of 500 and 1000 rupee banknotes has caused a panic among the public. In India where cash is the primary mode of transaction, currency demonetisation from the midnight of November 8 has led to liquidity crunch. In this scenario, the telecos extended the deadline for their subscribers to pay mobile bills by three days.

Bharti Airtel, the Indian global telecommunications services company, extended the bill payment on mobile and fixed telephony, broadband and subscription TV services due date to November 15, 2016. An Airtel spokesperson said, “Apart from extending bill payment due date to postpaid customers by up to 3 days, we are providing some talk time or data load to prepaid customers to ensure there is continuity of services and they are not inconvenienced.”

      Surprise and Bold Action Move:

The sudden late-night currency demonetisation was done in an effort to crack down on black money and to contain the rising incidence of fake notes. Starting from today, the people can get new 500 and 2000 notes cleared by RBI from all the branches of commercial banks or at any post office.

Re: GST Impact - How Will GST Affect Telecom Sector?

      alt text

As per the recent announcement by the Finance Ministry, telecom bills may go up with 18% Goods and Service Tax slab rate. Though the government is yet to announce segment wise rates, it has unveiled a four tier GST structure with rates of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.

      Increase in Monthly Bills:

The Economic Times, the leading daily newspaper on Indian economy and matters related to finance, reported that tax on telecom services could be 18% as compared to the current 15% rate. As a result, the effective 3% rise could be noticed in monthly telecom bills. For example, a subscriber currently paying a monthly mobile bill of ₹1,000 will have to shell out ₹30 more.

      May Hit Digital India Campaign:

On a larger scale, this higher GST rate could give a serious blow to Government’s Digital India ambitions. As it directly hurts the common man and growth of the infrastructure sector would be at a lower rate. Mr Rajan Mathews, Director-General, Cellular Operators Association of India, said, “Since telecom is an essential service under Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1968, it was imperative that the one country one tax GST rate should have been aligned with the merit rate of tax applicable for essential products and services, which is way below 15%”.

“It will have an inflationary effect on the overall cost of provisioning telecom services and increase costs for subscribers,” added Mr Mathews. Moreover, the continuation of Central Exercise duties and State Sales Taxes on petroproducts will have a negative impact on telecom companies. Incidentally, the telecom sector is the second biggest purchaser of diesel after the Indian Railways.

      Can it be 12% GST?

With the proposed four-tier Goods and Service Tax GST gets operational April 2017, the telecom industry executives expect that 12% GST slab rate is unlikely as it will mean a cut in revenue for the government. Keeping fingers crossed. Watch this space for more updates.

    • Connect Broadband to Offer 1Gbps Speed on its Fixed Line Network

      alt text

Punjab’s leading telecom operator, Connect Broadband, is all set to deploy 1Gbps speed internet on its fixed line network. The company has claimed that it successfully tested 100Mbps internet speed on copper and 500Mbps internet speed on FTTH network. With the achievement, the company is ready to launch high-speed 1Gbps internet in a phased manner.

Mentioning the biggest achievement, Mr. Arvind Bali, CEO Connect Broadband and Videocon Telecom, said, “With Internet of Things (IoT) revolution and connected value chain, the internet and network is expanding to all places including manufacturing floors, energy grids, healthcare facilities, and transportation.

Higher Screen Resolution - More Data Usage:

The importance of HD and 4K video content availability led to the higher bandwidths and finally delivering highest standards of Quality of Experience (QoE) for the customers. As a result, Videocon Group is taking it as a challenge and effectively created a network where the subscribers can exceed 1Gbps internet speed without any hassles. Te recap, Connect Broadband is offering 300GB free data and free voice calls to its customers without any changes in its pricing.

Apart from testing 100 Mbps and 500 Mbps speeds, the Connect Broadband is also piloting the technologies such as vectoring with VDSL and G.Fast to offer 300Mbps on its copper network. Recently, Connect Broadband has participated in “Broadband World Forum” held in London where it had got enough acquaintance to explore and assistance from the global players to deploy 1Gbps speed on its fixed line network.

Getting 1Gbps on fiber networks is not a thing of future. Reputed companies like AT&T, British Telecom, Google, and Verizon has already been offering 1Gbps speed on their networks. Connect Broadband and Reliance Jio trying their best to deploy the same service in India. As Reliance Jio is busy in tuning its network and operationalizing the Points-of-Interconnect issues, Connect Broadband will have good chance to make it the first in India. Of course, Connect Broadband has a greater presence in Punjab Telecom Circle.

    • Airtel to Counter Reliance Jio with VoLTE launch, Awards PAN-India Contract to Nokia

      alt text

Bharti Airtel is ready to counter Reliance Jio with a big bang VoLTE launch. India’s leading telecom operator has awarded a 60 million dollars (approx 402 crores) to Nokia to implement VoLTE technology. If the sources are to be believed, this voice-over-LTE will be launched within this year though there is no launch timeline for the same.

The Economic Times has highlighted the contract details between Sunil Mittal-led telecom giant and Helsinki-headquartered Nokia Networks technology and expertise to supply and implement Voice over LTE (VoLTE) solution. Earlier, Airtel considered this technology and piloted it in a few areas. With promising results, Bharti Airtel is now looking at a big bang launch on a PAN-India basis by striking a deal with Nokia for a smooth transition to VoLTE.

Nokia Networks is known for its rich expertise in implementing and integrating IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Open TAS (Telecommunications Application Server), Home Subscriber Server (HSS) and Border gateway (Open BGW) will enable VoLTE services.

      VoLTE Revolutionizing Communication:

VoLTE which allows high-definition (HD) voice calls have many advantages for both operators and customers. With VoLTE, the consumers can look forward to richer communication services, improved smartphone battery life, faster call setup times, no dropped calls and higher quality HD voice calls than regular voice applications.

By providing VoLTE, the telecom service provider can enhance indoor coverage using Wi-Fi and extend its communication services. The operator can offer both voice and data without switching between bands. Airtel currently offers calling on the legacy circuit-switch technology. The new technology enables spectral efficiency including improved performance under load. Moreover, the overall data consumption and signaling load are lower compared to over-the-top voice applications.

      alt text

      The Airtel Advantage:

As per the industry experts, Airtel will have a clear advantage if the company launches VoLTE services anytime soon. As Reliance Jio is still in nascent stage, yet to publicize the benefits of VoLTE technology, Airtel can use this opportunity. If Bharti Airtel can deploy VoLTE technology soon and make it as a complimentary service to its existing voice applications, the Airtel subscribers will be on cloud nine.

Telecom Industry Heads into Fierce VoLTE Race:

No doubt, Reliance Jio has given the necessary push to smartphone makers to incorporate VoLTE feature in their handsets. As per the recent report by Cybermedia Research, more than 14 million VoLTE-enabled handsets are estimated to have been shipped into India in the September quarter. This is roughly twice the number in the previous quarter.

Interestingly, India’s second and third largest telecom service providers (Vodafone India and Idea Cellular) could also join the VoLTE race anytime. Vodafone is already piloting VoLTE in select areas using Nokia’s IMS solution. On the other hand, Idea Cellular is in talks with Stockholm-headquartered networking and telecommunications equipment and services company Ericsson. Their 4G spectrum holdings in the recently concluded auctions highlight the same.
