    • Nokia 216, a New Dual SIM Feature Phone by Microsoft

      alt text

Microsoft announced a new dual SIM feature phone. If you are keeping track of the recent developments of Nokia, then this will be a big surprise. The new feature phone is christened as Nokia 216.

      The Last Microsoft-made Nokia Phone:

Probably, in mid-may, Microsoft sold off Nokia brand to Foxconn subsidiary, HMD Global for $350 million. The new announcement of Nokia 216 is a big surprise indicating that this will be the last Nokia phone by Microsoft. Officially, Foxconn has started manufacturing Nokia feature phones from their Chennai plant in India.

By looking at Nokia 216, you’ll get nostalgic of holding a Nokia handset in the mid-2000s. This Nokia 216 is a basic feature phone where one can access the internet and play music. However, it is to be remembered that the new Nokia 216 lacks the advanced features of a smartphone. This low feature Microsoft phone is aimed at the Indian market and thus priced it at ₹2495 and will be available in retail stores from 24th October, 2016.

      Nokia 216 Feature Phone Specifications:

The handset packs some interesting features including space for up 2000 contacts and has a polycarbonate shell with matching color keys. It sports 2.4-inch QVGA (240x320 pixels) display screen and runs on Nokia’s Series 30+ operating system coupled with 16MB RAM and 0.3-megapixel front and rear camera. The rear camera LED flash doubles as a built-in torchlight. You can browse and download apps and games from the Opera web store. The users can download one Gameloft game absolutely free every month for a period of 1 year.

Nokia 216 phone also supports Stereo FM radio, MP3 and video players. It sports a 3.5mm audio jack and is backed by a replaceable Li-ion 1020 mAh battery that can power the device a standby time of up to 24 days ( and up to 19 days for Nokia 216 Dual SIM phone). The company claims that the Nokia 216 provides a continuous voice conversation of up to 18 hours and comes with a memory card support up to 32GB storage.

      alt text

This is to mention that Nokia 216 feature phone is available both in single SIM and dual SIM variants. It’s built in Cyan, Silver and Black as color options. And to warn there will be no Wi-Fi support.

      What’s Your Take?

Overall, Nokia 216 is a good phone for its price and this feature phone is necessary for everyone. If you had been a die-hard fan of Nokia, then this could be the last release from Microsoft. Don’t worry, more Nokia devices will be released but this time from HMD Global or Foxconn subsidiary.

    • Sunil Bharti Mittal Warns, a Consolidation is around the Corner

      alt text

Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal admits that Reliance Jio’s launch will result in a big shake-up in the telecom sector. In his first interview after Mukesh Ambani’s ambitious Jio launch, admits Jio is a tough rival but Bharti Airtel is well prepared to take it on.

Though Jio’s data-push is a big thumbs-up, Mittal added that offering things for free can’t be considered as an innovation. Jio’s tariff plans were in expected lines, however adding voice to the data and offering it for free was something of a surprise. This will result in a big consolidation and the small players will struggle to cope up with the onslaught.

Airtel - A Product of Competition:

The chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal expects that his company will emerge stronger as it is a product of competition. We have come across technologies 2G, 3G and 4G. And we are the first to launch 4G in India in 2012. Despite strong competition, we are being referred as the No: 1 company in the telecom industry. Mr Mittal added that starting from AT&T, Hutchinson, Telenor to Idea and Vodafone, Airtel has been fighting on daily basis and is ready to play this market very aggressively.

Reliance Jio-Airtel Spat - Point of Interconnect:

Commenting on the row over Point of Interconnect (PoIs), all issues will be resolved within a few weeks. Unnecessarily, PoI’s has become a big issue. There needs to be a dialogue between all companies to correct the issues. And even added, Airtel would be pro-active in trying to settle these issues. However, Reliance Jio added that 10 crore calls failing daily for not providing adequate interconnection points. Hope TRAI would be looking in to this issue soon.

      What’s Your Take?

Do you think Bharti Airtel with its wide spectrum coverage and customer focus footprint will be able to take on Reliance Jio? Or will it yield market share?

    • Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime and Galaxy J5 Prime - First Impression

Re: Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime Launch Expected On September 19

      alt text

Samsung India launched two new Galaxy J7 series smartphones yesterday. Though we are aware of launch of the first one but the latter is a surprise addition. It seems Samsung has been adding new smartphones regularly to its product line. Last week, it was Galaxy A9 Pro and this week two new entrants in its Galaxy J series.

      Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime Specifications:

As it is was reported earlier, Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime gets the premium treatment with all-metal unibody finish. The smartphone sports 5.5-inch 1080p LCD touchscreen powered by 1.6GHz octa-core Exynos 7870 processor, 3GB RAM and 16GB inbuilt storage expandable up to 256GB using microSD card. On camera front, it supports 13-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera with LED flash and a fingerprint sensor. The new J7 Prime runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow based TouchWiz UI and backed by a decent 3300mAh battery. Connectivity wise, Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime supports dual SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

      Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime Specifications:

However, the surprise addition Galaxy J5 Prime is a 5-inch 720p LCD touchscreen powered by 64-bit 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 chipset and 2GB of RAM. On camera front, you won’t find a major difference except 5-megapixel front camera instead of 8-megapixel reported in J7 Prime smartphone. The front camera comes with a palm gesture selfie, wide angle selfie and beautifying effects for great looking selfies. Both the smartphones are covered by 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3. Similarly, all other things are common except a budget 2400mAh non-removable battery.

      Advanced Features:

      alt text

Moreover, Samsung has introduced S Battery planning feature that enables battery to preserve power for calls and forward calls when no battery. Similarly, a new addition – S Secure feature allows the users to protect their vital data using the fingerprint sensor.

      Availability:

Both the phones are available in two stunning colors - Black and Gold. As we know, the sale is open to all retail outlets and Samsung online store.

Right now, one can purchase the Galaxy J7 Prime at ₹ 18,790. However, one needs to wait till the month end for the purchase of Galaxy J5 Prime at ₹ 14,790. If we closely examine Samsung India’s pricing of J5 Prime, it seems to be in competition with the recently launched Lenovo’s Moto G4 Plus. However, if one compares specifications of both the phones, then Motorola G4 Plus is a better bet.

    • Samsung to Resume Galaxy Note 7 Sales from September 28

Re: Why Samsung Will Replace Current Galaxy Note 7 with New One?

      alt text

After announcing Galaxy Note 7 Safety Recall, Samsung is gearing up to resume its Note 7 sales reportedly from September 28th. Though its reputation is at stake, Samsung claimed the customer’s safety is their highest priority and urged the Note 7 users to participate in the U.S. Note 7 Exchange Program.

      Exchange Program:

You don’t need to go Samsung store to check whether you are eligible for the exchange program. Just enter your IMEI or serial number and check online. The Galaxy Note 7 owners can contact the carrier or retail outlet where they purchased their device and get the Note 7 exchanged or obtain a refund along with $25 gift card. This is really the biggest drive to recall 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 units after its batteries started overheating, catching fire and posed a safety risk.

      Galaxy 7 will resume Sales:

In spite of the faulty Note 7, people are ready to purchase the new and safe Galaxy 7 Note. Indeed, Note 7 is the flagship phablet of the South Korean electronics giant Samsung. The company has announced that the new Galaxy Note 7 will be at available with carrier/retailer no later than September 21, 2016.

However, according to a company spokeswoman, Samsung doesn’t want to mess the things with the Global Safety Recall and thus it would resume Galaxy Note 7 sales from September 28th, 2016 or when conditions allow. Hopefully, all these issues will settle down by that point.

The new wireless hotspot device, JioFi 4G, will sport an OLED display with a bigger battery and is on sale through Reliance Digital and Digital Xpress mini stores across India.

      Decent Specs with OLED Display:

Interestingly, the new JioFi 4G hotspot is also priced at the same cost of ₹ 1999. Identical to its predecessor, JioFi 4G portable wireless hotspot supports a microSD card and a micro-SIM card slot. As usual, the hotspot device is pre-bundled with Reliance.

    • OnePlus to Roll Out VoLTE Update for OnePlus 2 in the Next Quarter

      alt text

OnePlus, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has announced that it will roll out VoLTE update for its 2015 flagship killer device OnePlus 2. Since the launch of Reliance Jio network in India, OnePlus has been getting numerous requests to enable VoLTE (Voice over LTE) for OnePlus smartphones.

Out of Luck for OnePlus One & OnePlus X Users:

Through a forum that exclusively deals with OnePlus smartphones, the company has stated that they would be launching HD calling support (VoLTE) for OnePlus 2 in the next quarter. However, the company added that this OTA update would not be for OnePlus X and OnePlus One users. Thus, the users of these devices are out of luck, as of now.

This is to be noted that all the existing OnePlus smartphone users (including OnePlus X and OnePlus One) can use the newly launched Reliance Jio services through Jio4GVoice App and make HD calls on the network.

      OnePlus 3 Sales Reopened:

Meanwhile, after a month halt, OnePlus 3 sales are now reopened in Europe and Hong Kong. This latest flagship device has inbuilt VoLTE feature. Indeed, OnePlus 3 is practically the perfect Android smartphone with style and power.

    • US Alone Reports Over 70 Incidents of Note 7 Overheating

Re: Why Samsung Will Replace Current Galaxy Note 7 with New One?

According to the latest reports, United States alone reports over 70 incidents of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 overheating. According to an official report released by Canadian Consumer Safety Authority, there were over 70 incidents in United States where the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 got overheated, caught fire, or exploded.

However, the press release of Samsung on September 1st reported 35 incidents of battery issue with Note 7. With the latest reports, Samsung has estimated that there is a battery issue that could affect 1 in every 42,000 units.

      Temporary Fix - OTA Update?

In order to prevent much damage, Samsung has totally recalled Galaxy Note 7. If the latest reports are to be believed, Samsung has been working on releasing an OTA update that would permanently limit the capacity of the battery to 60%. That means, following the OTA update, the Note 7 handsets will stop charging when the battery reaches 60% of its capacity. Apart from this, the OTA update will also urge the users to give in for the recall.

The company said “This OTA update is meant for the customers who have not responded to the Samsung’s Recall”. It’s a big thing that the company is taking all steps to counter bad publicity. However, the loss of consumer confidence is a big long term damage that could benefit the launch of Apple iPhone 7.

      alt text

Bharti Airtel launched its 4G services in Siliguri town. This is indeed a milestone to Airtel as it has now made a mark in the North Bengal region. Using 2300 Mhz spectrum band, Airtel has made sure that the customers can enjoy higher spectrum efficiency with increased internet speeds.

Now the subscribers of Airtel can upgrade their handsets to experience Airtel 4G services. Addressing the launch, Mr. Ravindra Singh Negi, CEO – West Bengal & Odisha, said the company would soon wrap all the major locations in North Bengal and Sikkim with 4G services.

This is to remind that Airtel has scripted its 4G journey in India by launching its first 4G services in Kolkata in April 2012. Now, it has expanded its 4G services in Kharagpur, Baharampur and Haldi in West Bengal. By offering 4G in North Bengal and Sikkim, Airtel can easily target higher revenue as these locations serves as the base for major tourist attractions like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Dooars, Gangtok and many more.

    • BSNL Added 2.3 Million Mobile Connections in August 2016

      alt text

The state-run telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) said it has added 2.3 million mobile connections during the month of August 2016. With its PAN India coverage, BSNL’s new milestone in mobile segment is a positive sign of scaling new heights.

BSNL 3G service is present across the 22 telecom circles. Interestingly, 12 out of 22 telecom circles have made a good contribution and achieved the assigned target. Starting from Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, UP (East), UP (West) to Uttaranchal, BSNL has got a tremendous positive response in the sale of new SIMS.

Starting from June 2015, BSNL has been getting good response due to its ZERO ROAMING charges across India in prepaid and postpaid segments. Further, mobile number portability (MNP) is also a big addition.

      A Trend Setter:

The lowest 3G data tariff and ZERO roaming charges across India are the prime factors contributing BSNL’s success in the mobile segment. Though low at speed, BSNL is the front runner to challenge Reliance Jio’s unlimited free calling feature. Moreover, BSNL’s Student Special Plan has been a crowd puller among the youth by offering 1GB free 3G data apart from the lowest voice call rates.

BSNL’s new 3G plans such as ₹ 1099 unlimited 3G data pack, 10GB ₹ 549 data pack have been an instant success as there is no speed restriction. There are a number of initiatives taken by BSNL to counter the other telecom players. Some of them are doubling the validity period and incorporating unlimited voice calling feature to any network across India.

      Realistic Target?

BSNL CMD said - “As far as challenge is concerned, we cannot wish it away. I believe, BSNL is in a position to match Reliance Jio’s tariffs most successfully, because we are an incumbent operator. We are landline and optical fibre operator so our broadband tariff rides on our own network. We don’t have to start procuring, investing and then come out with offerings.”

Going by the excellent feedback, BSNL has set a target of 3 million new mobile connections in the coming months in spite of Reliance Jio’s threat. As per the BSNL CMD Mr. Anupam Shrivastava, the state-run telecom will adopt a aggressive stance on tariffs.
