      alt text

The state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will be rolling out its 4G services in 2017-18. This has been confirmed by the company’s CMD Anupam Shrivastava and reported by RTN Asia. The roll-out has been pending from the last four years.

      Much Awaited BSNL 4G Rollout:

Though the exact launch period was not mentioned by Mr Anupam Shrivastava, the BSNL subscribers might see 4G services in the next six months. Moreover, the telecom company has not revealed any information regarding its 4G business.

Also Read: BSNL Seeks 5MHz Spectrum in 700MHz Band to Roll-out 4G Services

Incidentally, it is interesting to note that BSNL will be launching 4G services on revenue sharing basis. The company will hand over the spectrum to independent parties of a state to manage the 4G roll out by providing the bandwidth to technology service provider.

Mr Anupam Shrivastava’s announcement comes at a time when the existing telecom players are offering high-speed 4G services at cheaper rates. Starting from Bharti Airtel to the latest Reliance Jio, all the telecom players are upgrading their network to 4G to provide better services to their subscribers.

Adapting to Dynamic Changes in Telecom Business:

Back in 2014, the state-run telecom company BSNL has incurred losses and thus sold out its 4G spectrum in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kolkata, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Though BSNL has gone beyond its limits, the company has to address 4G services offerings on a quick note.

    • RE: Telenor in Talks with Bharti Airtel to Sell India Business for $350 Million

      @Amitav-Sengupta

If I’m not wrong Telenor - Unitech merger was valued at $375 million. Back in the year 2009, Telenor bought 49% stake in Unitech Wireless (the telecom arm of a realty firm Unitech). In a year or so, it raised its stake to over 60%.

Though the Joint Venture license was canceled by the Apex court in India in 2012, it remained in the Indian market. However, after the exit of Unitech, Telenor has got 100% control on the businesses. Then, the company rebranded itself from Uninor to Telenor. Wait and watch for the next part of the story.

    • Government Rolls Out IVRS to Address the Problem of Call Drops

      alt text

The Union Government rolled out IVRS platform at multiple locations to get direct feedback from telecom subscribers on call quality. The IVRS (Integrated Voice Response System) platform is currently launched in Delhi, Goa, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. As per the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), this IVRS system will soon be extended across the country.

IVRS to Tackle Call Drop Menace:

Under this system, the telecom subscribers will receive an IVRS call from the short code 1955 and will be asked a few queries such as whether the user is facing call drops in his or her area. Apart from this, the subscriber can also send a toll-free SMS to the short code 1955 containing the location details if the user faces the problem of call drops. The obtained feedback will be shared with the telecom network operators so that they take corrective steps in the problematic areas to curb frequent call drops.

Launching the new IVRS system, Mr. Manoj Sinha, Minister of Communications & IT, Govt of India, said: “The platform is a channel to capture direct feedback from the consumers and this voice of the customer can be used to improve the services that are being offered to them”. He also added that initially the government will use the system for call drops and will extend this to capture consumer feedback in other areas as well in the future.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken a slew of initiatives to address the problem of call drops. The telecom network operators have installed more than 1, 30,000 additional Base Transceiver Stations during the period between June 2016 and October 2016. And have plans to install 1, 50,000 Base Transceiver Stations across the country by March 31, 2017.

      The Backbone Network?

The Telecom Minister Mr. Manoj Sinha added, “Till consumers say that they are free of call drops, I won’t accept it. The platform would be the right parameter to gauge the call drop situation”. Hope this would bring necessary changes in the telecom sector which is a backbone of Digital India.

    • BSNL Starts Offering Unlimited Free Calling at ₹99 with 300MB Data

      alt text

BSNL, the state-run telecom company, started offering unlimited free calling to its pre-paid customers at just ₹99 unlike its competitors. Though this expensive rate is limited to specific telecom circles but still it has got some upper-hand over its competitors.

As per the latest offer, BSNL will offer unlimited local and STD calls within its network and 300MB data for ₹99. However, this rate is applicable to Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Kolkata, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal telecom circles. In other circles, the state-run telecom company is offering the same benefit with variable pricing ranging from ₹119 to ₹149 with a validity of 28 days.

      Advantage BSNL:

Apart from the free on-net calls, BSNL has offered unlimited off-net calling facility including both local and STD to any network with 1GB data at ₹339. This unlimited calling facility is offered with a validity of 28 days on PAN-India basis. There are twin advantages with BSNL telecom; one it is PAN India network with a good rural coverage, and the other being zero roaming charges.

Commenting on the launch of the offering, Mr. RK Mittal, Director – Consumer Mobility, BSNL, said: “Tariff offered by BSNL are the most competitive and is committed to provide affordable and excellent services to our esteemed customers.”

It is to be noted BSNL is already offering Unlimited 3G data services for ₹1099 with 30 days validity. No other telecom service provider is offering similar tariff. With the launch of Reliance Jio, there have been drastic changes in the telecom sector. First, the new entrant started offering free voice calling and data under Jio Welcome Offer in September and now it extended the free services until 31st March 2017.

      What is Your Opinion?

Reeling under pressure, the incumbent telecom players including Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone India started offering free calls on-net and off-net at around ₹150 and ₹350 respectively with 28 days validity. These companies tried to match free 4G services of the new entrant Reliance Jio but with limited mobile data connectivity. The telcom analysts say that the offers announced by the incumbent telecom players are nothing to compete with Jio but still they are doing something to retain their customer base.

    • Telenor in Talks with Idea Cellular to Sell Indian Unit without Actual Payout

      alt text

Telenor, the Norway based telecom giant, is in talks with Idea Cellular to sell Indian unit without an actual payout. Telenor India which has been struggling to perform with its limited spectrum holdings in just six circles is looking for a potential buyer to take over its liabilities.Incidentally, Idea Cellular is the third largest mobile network operator in India promoted by Aditya Birla Group.

      Struggling to Pay off Debt:

As per the recent report published by The Economic Times, the two companies have held bilateral discussions for the transfer of assets and liabilities without an actual payout. Telenor owes close to ₹1900 crore to Indian government for delayed payments in spectrum and about ₹1800 crore to various financial institutions as debt.

In the beginning of the year 2016, Telenor India was valued ₹5000 crore and now it has come down to ₹4000 crore. Signalling its exit, Telenor India didn’t even participate in the recently concluded 4G spectrum auction.

Telenor India has 1800MHz Band 3 presence in 7 telecom circle areas in the country including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Assam, Bihar and Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa, Uttar Pradesh (East) and, Uttar Pradesh (West) and Uttarakhand. However, the company has not launched its commercial services yet in Assam. Incidentally, Idea Cellular holds first or second position in most of these telecom circles.

      Will Telenor Succeed or Not?

With differences over valuation, Telenor India couldn’t progress its merger deal with British Vodafone Group. Interestingly, the current deal with Idea Cellular might not succeed as the teleco has already had a debt of over ₹36000 crore including ₹13,000 crore spent for securing additional spectrum in the recently concluded October auction. With the entry of Reliance Jio, the telecom companies are facing stiff competition as their earnings dip and are ramped up to retain their subscribers.
